He studied oboe under Gustave Vogt at the Paris Conservatory, ultimately becoming teacher there himself in 1832. He also played second oboe next to Vogt at the Paris Opéra, where Fétis found Brod¿s tone sweeter than that of his teacher. Brod became interested in the construction of the oboe and was perhaps the first builder to add octave keys to the instrument. His Méthode pour le hautbois (Paris, 1835-36) provides valuable technical information concerning the oboe and remains a useful resource for modern players. Brod¿s three woodwind quintets most likely date from the second decade of the nineteenth century and were printed by two separate publishers, Pacini and Schonenberger, both of Paris. All three quintets feature a four-movement format: a longer first movement in sonata form, a slow movement, a minuet, and a quick-tempo finale. As a whole, the quintets form a nice complement to those of Danzi, Reicha, and somewhat later, Franz Lachner. Brod remains the only actual woodwind player among these early composers of wind quintets. While not very well known today, Brod¿s contributions to the wind quintet literature are significant and worthy of greater attention; this is particularly true in view of the paucity of wind quintets throughout the nineteenth century. The British horn player Dennis Brain (1921-1957) is commonly described by such statements as "the greatest horn player of the 20th Century," "a genius," and "a legend." He was both a prodigy and popularizer, famously performing a concerto on a garden hose in perfect pitch. On his usual concert instrument his tone was of unsurpassed beauty and clarity, complemented by a flawless technique. The recordings he made with Herbert von Karajan of Mozart's horn concerti are considered the definitive interpretations. Brain enlisted in the English armed forces during World War II for seven years, joining the National Symphony Orchestra in wartime in 1942. After the war he filled the principal horn positions in both the Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras. He later formed his own wind quintet and began conducting. Composers including Benjamin Britten and Paul Hindemith lined up to write music for him. Even fifty years after his tragic death at the age of 36 in an auto accident in 1957, Peter Maxwell Davies was commissioned to write a piece in his honor. Stephen Gamble and William Lynch have conducted numerous interviews with family, friends, and colleagues and uncovered information in the BBC archives and other lesser known sources about recordings that were previously unknown. This volume describes Brain's life and analyzes in depth his musical career. Its appendices of information on performances will appeal to music historians, and its details on Brain's instruments and equipment will be useful to horn players.

The knowledge that finales are by tradition (and perhaps also necessarily) 'different' from other movements has been around a long time, but this is the first time that the special nature of finales in instrumental music has been examined comprehensively and in detail. Three main types offinale, labelled 'relaxant', 'summative', and 'valedictory', are identified. Each type is studied closely, with a wealth of illustration and analytical commentary covering the entire period from the Renaissance to the present day. The history of finales in five important genres -- suite, sonata,string quartet, symphony, and concerto -- is traced, and the parallels and divergences between these traditions are identified. Several wider issues are mentioned, including narrativity, musical rounding, inter-movement relationships, and the nature of codas. The book ends with a look at thefinales of all Shostakovich's string quartets, in which examples of most of the types may be found.
