Excerpt from Mineral Resources of the United States, Vol. 2: Calendar Year 1908; Nonmetallic Products The year 1908 Will be remembered as one of general depression in the coal-mining industry and comparable to some extent with the lean years 1894, 1895, and 1896, yet the total production in 1908 exceeded that of any year in our history with the single exception of 1907, the year of record-making activity and production. In 1907, or at least until the panic developed in October, the principal com plaint of operators was the scarcity of labor to work the mines and of railroad cars and motive power to transport the roduct. No such difficulties were experienced in 1908, for although the output in the year under review was per cent 'less than in 1907, there was a pronounced increase in the number of men employed, both in the anthracite and bituminous mines, and the transportation equip ment was at all times ample to take care of the diminished tonnage. Excerpt from Mineral Resources of the United States, 1922, Vol. 2: Nonmetals Figure 1. - Fuel briquets produced in the Eastern, Central, and Pacific Coast States and in the United States, 1907-1922. The value of the briquets produced in 1922 was an increase compared with the value in 1921 Of or 50 per cent. The increase over the value in 1920 was or 18 per cent. Although the total value increased, the average value per ton decreased rom in 1921 to in 1922. The decline was not due to a general lowering of prices of briquets, but to the fact that the low-priced product in Pennsylvania and Washington formed a larger art than usual of the total production. A better idea of the trend) in prices of briquets may be gained from the fol lowing table, which shows the average value per ton at plants in Pennsylvania and the Central States. Excerpt from Mineral Resources of the United States, 1924, Vol. 2: Nonmetals Parish, La., which, however, will not be worked or some time. The agreement between the American producers and the Sicilian Sulphur Consortium, described in Mineral Resources for 1922 and 1923, has apparently aided the Sicilian producers. Prior to the World War the annual production of sulphur in Sicily averaged over long tons. The production during and since the war has decreased materially, owing largely to the increased competition for European markets by chea ly produced American sulphur from Louisiana and Texas mines. T e historical table on page 3 shows the tremendous increase in recent years in the exports of sulphur from the United States. In 1922 the production of sulphur in Sicily had dwindled to long tons, but in 1923 it increased to long tons, and in 1924 it amounted to long tons. From 1880 through 1903 an average annual production of long tons of sulphur was made, starting with over 500 tons in 1880 and approximating tons in 1903.
