C., City Directory, Including Wilkesboro, 1939-1940, Vol. 1: Containing an Alphabetical Directory of Business Concerns and Private Citizens, Occupants of Office Buildings and Other Business Places North Wilkesboro's industrial history dates from the year 1889, when Arthur A Finley and I Gordon Hackett, who were born and reared in the county, established a lumber and mill working plant on the north side of Heddies River. The plant started right off manufacturing building materials and has been running ever since. In 1890, when North Wilkesboro acquired its name, this plant was the first manufacturing enterprise that the town had In the next few years, there were located in the town the C C Smoot Sons Company tannery, which was the largest in the South and is now owned by the International Shoe Company; Forest Furniture Company; Oak Furniture Company; Turner - White Casket Company, and other plants. Today there are five furniture factories, one tannery, one cotton mill, one hosiery mill, one casket factory, one grist mill and saw mill factory, one butter and cheese factory, one roller mill, one mirror factory, three wood working plants and other plants, making a total of twenty indus trial plants in N orth Wilkesboro. North Wilkesboro's industrial expansion has been steady. It is known today as a leading furniture manufacturing center. Some of its manufactured products are shipped to points all over the United States and into foreign countries.
