There is a Mayor and three mem bers of the Board of Aldermen. An efficient police force is maintained, and the town is protected from fire by a volunteer department. The Town of Canton was first known as Pigeon Ford, until 1891, when it was incorporated as Pigeon River and in 1905 the charter was amended to Town of Canton.
