Excerpt from The Army Sketch Book: An Artist's Story of the War Leaving our horses in care of some infantry posted in reserve in a piece of woods, we advanced slowly toward the line of breastworks in the extreme front. We took all possible cover by creeping though woods and behind fences until we reached the line of redoubts and breastworks facing the enemy's position. A non-combatant is strangely impressed at the quiet, nonchalant air of the men who hold important position on the line. If it were not for the sharp crack of skirmish fire in front one could almost imagine himself enjoying the delights of a summer camp, although the Napoleon and Parrot guns pointing through embrasures at intervals along the log-breast works had an air of significance, and the smoke-begrimed muzzles and mud-covered wheels and' carriages showed the severe service they had rendered. We found many of the men asleep along the line; some were playing cards, and others attending to camp duties, such as washing clothes, etc. All seemed free from any care about what might occur; that was somebody else's business.
