Excerpt from Michigan Historical Collections, Vol. 28: Collections and Researches Owing to the veto by Governor Pingree of the appropriation made by the legislature of 1897 for carrying on the work of the Pioneer and Historical Society, the publications of its historical collections were suspended during the years 1898 and 1899. Annual meetings of the Society were held in Lansing each year, pursuant to the provisions of law, and meetings of the Executive Com mittee and of the Committee of Historians were also held as occasion seemed to require, the members thereof paying their own expenses rather than to permit a discontinuance of the work that has been performed for the past twenty-six years. The sentiment was unanimous that it would be unwise to let the Society die because of the failure of an appropriation for two years. Its publications are highly prized by historians, Historical Societies and Librarians throughout the United States. We may mention the fact that obtaining copies of numerous and important original documents in the Canadian archives, through the painstaking efforts of the late Col. Michael Shoemaker, and their publica tion by this Society, was their first and only appearance in print. Other persons had searched for them in vain, and have gratefully acknowledged the work thus performed. The Legislature of 1899 made a moderate appropriation to continue the work of the Society, which received Governor Pingree's approval, and now, after a lapse of nearly three years, the Committee of Historians take pleasure in presenting to the public volume twenty-eight of the Collee tions of the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society - Volume twenty seven having appeared in 1897 - and also take' pride in recommending it as one of the most interesting volumes of the series. Among the papers published herein, to which special attention is called will be found one on Early Lansing, p. 172, a paper most carefully prepared by Mrs. Sarah E. Dart from her own reminiscences and helps from the House Journal. Following this on page 179, will be found a history of Fort St. Joseph. Excerpt from Historical Collections, Vol. 35: Collections and Researches Made by the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society Perhaps the most noteworthy record in this volume is that of the Memorial Meeting in honor of Governor Stevens T. Mason, and the presence on that occasion of Miss Emily Mason, aged ninety years, a sister of the first governor of the state; also of his daughter, Mrs. Wright, and of two of his grandsons. The enthusiasm evoked was gratifying evidence that our people feel a deep interest in the events of the past, and of those who took part in building a new American commonwealth. Much valuable' history was recalled on this occasion. It is'also worthy of special mention that in this volume appears the record of the Society's first midwinter meeting, held in Detroit, which resulted in enlarging the knowledge of the work that is being done by the Society, in affording an opportunity to the citizens and pioneers of that city to become personally familiar with its purposes and methods. Excerpt from Historical Collections, Vol. 27: Collections and Researches Made by the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society In this, the twenty-seventh volume of the Michigan Pioneer and His torical Collections, the Committee of Historians take pride in stating that they present to the reader one of the most interesting volumes of the series. Each year in the history of this society since its organization has brought to us valuable (papers that have secured to us important history relating to this State, which have been secured to posterity through these annual publications. The collections of the past year have been no excep tion and the material of this volume is but an additional proof of the value of this society in procuring and distributing to our public libraries a history of the earlier days of our State that may be made a study for both old and young in all the years to come. Among other interesting matter here offered we desire to call particular attention to the life of Senator Lucius Lyon, found at page 404, and also to letters written bv him, commencing at page 412. These letters contain a history within themselves, that are beyond value to the student of State affairs. The society is under many obligations to Mr. L. G. Stuart, who gave time and expense to secure these letters. The paper found at pages 341 and 840, relating to the bou-ndarv lines of our State, have been carefully prepared from records and maps, and the society is under thany obligations to Miss Anna'h May Soule in giving us the. Benefit of her labor by these articles. These, with articles from the same source in a previous volume, give the entire history of our State boundary.
