Excerpt from History of Methodism: For Our Young People The writer of this little volume has but a few words to say in presenting it to the public. It has been prepared under the conviction that such a book is needed for use in our Sunday Schools, and for general circulation among our people. Most of the histories of Methodism are elaborate works of several volumes, which a great many Methodists have neither the money to buy nor the time to read. And yet no person who honors the memory of John Wesley, and blesses God for raising him up to do a great work, should consent to live with out some knowledge of his wonderful life and labors, and of the results which have followed in every part of the world. Excerpt from Methodism IN this short sketch of a great subject the author has tried to put himself into the critical but not un friendly position oi the interested outsider, for whom primarily this volume is intended. This is especially the case in Chapter IV. On the Divisions of Method ism, and in Chapter V. On the Theology and Polity of Methodism. It will be perfectly obvious that, in so short a sketch as the present, many questions have had to be dealt with briefly, which in a work on a larger scale could have been more generously treated. Excerpt from Wesley and Methodism What has been attempted in the present work? Certainly, not a full and particular biography of John Wesley. He, it is true, is the central figure, and it is hoped that sufficient heed has been given to his personal actions and qualities to ensure a distinct, a recognisable, and - if only it might be! - vivid portrait of that king of men. But a full and particular biography would call for more pages than go to compose the entire work. On the other hand, the aim has been something other than to string together a scries of essays on various aspects of Methodism. While the writer has avoided Tyerman's method of strict chronological order -excellent though it is for some purposes-as involving broken lights and insecure perspective, he has striven to mark the stages of Methodist evolution by treating in successive chapters characteristics of the movement, as they assumed exceptional importance at successive periods of Wesley's life. Naturally, however, my first care has been to provide a fitting introduction for the man with whom tho movement is inseparably associated.
