This report presents a cost analysis of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) production from p-xylene. The process examined is a conventional catalytic oxidation process. In this process, p-xylene is oxidized to Terephthalic Acid. The Terephthalic Acid from reaction passes through separation and drying steps and Crude Terephthalic Acid (CTA) is obtained as an intermediate. Subsequently, the CTA is subjected to purification via hydrogenation and PTA is separated as the final product. This report examines one-time costs associated with the construction of a United States-based plant and the continuing costs associated with the daily operation of such a plant. More specifically, it discusses: * Capital Investment, broken down by: - Total fixed capital required, divided in production unit (ISBL); infrastructure (OSBL) and contingency - Alternative perspective on the total fixed capital, divided in direct costs, indirect costs and contingency - Working capital and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up * Production cost, broken down by: - Manufacturing variable costs (raw materials, utilities) - Manufacturing fixed costs (maintenance costs, operating charges, plant overhead, local taxes and insurance) - Depreciation and corporate overhead costs * Raw materials consumption, products generation and labor requirements * Process block flow diagram and description of industrial site installations (production unit and infrastructure) This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): (1) "Terephthalic Acid, Dimethyl Terephthalate, and Isophthalic Acid", Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 7th edition; (2) EP Patent 0824653, issued to DuPont in 2000 Keywords: Para-xylene, Paraxylene, TPA, CTA, Hydrogenation, Amoco, Catalytic Oxidation, Acetic Acid, BP, X Technology, PET, Polyethylene Terephthalate, Bromine

This report presents a cost analysis of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) production from p-xylene. The process examined is similar to BP X Technology. In this process, p-xylene is oxidized to Terephthalic Acid. The Terephthalic Acid from reaction is separated as a Crude Terephthalic Acid (CTA) intermediate. The CTA is subjected to hydrogenation and PTA is obtained as the final product. The drying and storage of the CTA intermediate is not necessary in this process. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): (1) EP Patent 1054855, issued to BP Amoco in 2000 (2) US Patent 20150166452, issued to BP in 2015 Keywords: Para-xylene, Paraxylene, TPA, CTA, Hydrogenation, Amoco, Catalytic Oxidation, Acetic Acid, BP, X Technology, PET, Polyethylene Terephthalate

The first book to place recent academic developments within the context of real life industrial applications, this is a timely overview of the field of aerobic oxidation reactions in the liquid phase that also illuminates the key challenges that lie ahead. As such, it covers both homogeneous as well as heterogeneous chemocatalysis and biocatalysis, along with examples taken from various industries: bulk chemicals and monomers, specialty chemicals, flavors and fragrances, vitamins, and pharmaceuticals. One chapter is devoted to reactor concepts and engineering aspects of these methods, while another deals with the relevance of aerobic oxidation catalysis for the conversion of renewable feedstock. With chapters written by a team of academic and industrial researchers, this is a valuable reference for synthetic and catalytic chemists at universities as well as those working in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries seeking a better understanding of these reactions and how to design large scale processes based on this technology.

The Theory of Recycle Processes in Chemical Engineering deals with the theory and methods related to dynamic (flow) systems and with the processes in static systems with recycles, The book investigates complex recycle processes through the use of concepts and examples. The development and refinement of chemical technology involves processes that are purely chemical or technological in nature. The technological approach consists in the design of industrial processes where chemical reaction occurs with minimum by-products, and with the maximum useful employment of each unit of catalyst surface and reaction space. The book explores effective systems for the complex processing of chemical raw materials using the technological approach. The text reviews the elementary principles of the theory of recycle process through derivation of equations for simple recycling processes where one or more chemical reactions occur in a single medium or reactor in which the reactions happen consecutively, or in a parallel manner. The book also explains how the investigator can determine the technologically-optimum characteristics of the reaction unit employing five steps. The text will benefit industrial chemists, researchers, technical designers, and engineers, whose works are related with chemistry and recycling.

We cannot imagine a world without plastics. Plastic products make our daily life safe, healthy and convenient. Besides all the benefits, the current plastics economy gives rise to environmental concerns with respect to fossil oil depletion and plastic waste accumulation. In a circular economy, however, plastics can be redesigned for reusability and recyclability. This book makes the topic of sustainable plastics approachable for students and career starters alike, describing the nature and chemistry of (bio)polymers as well as how to create a closed loop of plastic materials.
