Surface engineering is an increasingly important field and consequently those involved need to be aware of the vast range of technologies available to modify surfaces. This text provides an up-to-date, authoritative exposition of the major condensed phase methods used for producing metallurgical and ceramic coatings. Each method is discussed thoroughly by an expert in that field. In each chapter the principle of the method, its range of applications and technical aspects involved are described. The book not only informs the reader about established technologies familiar only to specialists, but also details activity on the frontier of coating technology providing an insight into those potential technologies not yet fully developed but which should emerge in the near future.

During the few hours required for conducting this Symposium, ceramic coatings were applied, at one plant in this country, to eight heat exchangers for large aircraft. This figure of one every 20 min. is based upon a reported production rate of 120 per week, on a one-shift schedule. In 1944 the regular production of steel exhaust stacks (S.A.E. 1025) with a high-temperature ceramic coating was begun, and there is still a regular schedule of production in these same items. In the meantime, tens of thousands of steel exhaust stacks have been coated, the production schedule naturally being at a peak during the war. These facts are important to the present discussion because they indicate that ceramic coatings are already effective in the high-temperature protection of metals in some phases of the aircraft industry, and we may therefore infer that they are promising as protective coatings for gas turbine materials.
