This book is a summary of more than a decade of research in the area of backend optimization. It contains the latest fundamental research results in this field. While existing books are often more oriented toward Masters students, this book is aimed more towards professors and researchers as it contains more advanced subjects. It is unique in the sense that it contains information that has not previously been covered by other books in the field, with chapters on phase ordering in optimizing compilation; register saturation in instruction level parallelism; code size reduction for software pipelining; memory hierarchy effects and instruction level parallelism. Other chapters provide the latest research results in well-known topics such as register need, and software pipelining and periodic register allocation.

Multicore Processors and Systems provides a comprehensive overview of emerging multicore processors and systems. It covers technology trends affecting multicores, multicore architecture innovations, multicore software innovations, and case studies of state-of-the-art commercial multicore systems. A cross-cutting theme of the book is the challenges associated with scaling up multicore systems to hundreds of cores. The book provides an overview of significant developments in the architectures for multicore processors and systems. It includes chapters on fundamental requirements for multicore systems, including processing, memory systems, and interconnect. It also includes several case studies on commercial multicore systems that have recently been developed and deployed across multiple application domains. The architecture chapters focus on innovative multicore execution models as well as infrastructure for multicores, including memory systems and on-chip interconnections. The case studies examine multicore implementations across different application domains, including general purpose, server, media/broadband, network processing, and signal processing. Multicore Processors and Systems is the first book that focuses solely on multicore processors and systems, and in particular on the unique technology implications, architectures, and implementations. The book has contributing authors that are from both the academic and industrial communities.

The State of Memory Technology Over the past decade there has been rapid growth in the speed of micropro cessors. CPU speeds are approximately doubling every eighteen months, while main memory speed doubles about every ten years. The International Tech nology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) study suggests that memory will remain on its current growth path. The ITRS short-and long-term targets indicate continued scaling improvements at about the current rate by 2016. This translates to bit densities increasing at two times every two years until the introduction of 8 gigabit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, after which densities will increase four times every five years. A similar growth pattern is forecast for other high-density chip areas and high-performance logic (e.g., microprocessors and application specific inte grated circuits (ASICs)). In the future, molecular devices, 64 gigabit DRAMs and 28 GHz clock signals are targeted. Although densities continue to grow, we still do not see significant advances that will improve memory speed. These trends have created a problem that has been labeled the Memory Wall or Memory Gap.

The area of data analysis has been greatly affected by our computer age. For example, the issue of collecting and storing huge data sets has become quite simplified and has greatly affected such areas as finance and telecommunications. Even non-specialists try to analyze data sets and ask basic questions about their structure. One such question is whether one observes some type of invariance with respect to scale, a question that is closely related to the existence of long-range dependence in the data. This important topic of long-range dependence is the focus of this unique work, written by a number of specialists on the subject. The topics selected should give a good overview from the probabilistic and statistical perspective. Included will be articles on fractional Brownian motion, models, inequalities and limit theorems, periodic long-range dependence, parametric, semiparametric, and non-parametric estimation, long-memory stochastic volatility models, robust estimation, and prediction for long-range dependence sequences. For those graduate students and researchers who want to use the methodology and need to know the "tricks of the trade," there will be a special section called "Mathematical Techniques." Topics in the first part of the book are covered from probabilistic and statistical perspectives and include fractional Brownian motion, models, inequalities and limit theorems, periodic long-range dependence, parametric, semiparametric, and non-parametric estimation, long-memory stochastic volatility models, robust estimation, prediction for long-range dependence sequences. The reader is referred to more detailed proofs if already found in the literature. The last part of the book is devoted to applications in the areas of simulation, estimation and wavelet techniques, traffic in computer networks, econometry and finance, multifractal models, and hydrology. Diagrams and illustrations enhance the presentation. Each article begins with introductory background material and is accessible to mathematicians, a variety of practitioners, and graduate students. The work serves as a state-of-the art reference or graduate seminar text.
