This book is about the life of a girl who grew up on the AuSable River in Michigan during the 1940's and 1950's. What I lived like in those two decades will never be the same again. My story involves company housing, hydro operations, dams, and my daily life growing up on the AuSable River. I was one of the "Dam Kids," one of the children living on the River whose dad worked for Consumer's Power, operating one of the hydroelectric dams. There were very few "dam kids" when I was growing up, and none my age who lived at the Loud Dam site, my home when I first moved to the AuSable River. The only child of Donald W. and Helen M. Weinberg, I moved with my parents from Flint, Michigan in 1942. We moved to a man's dream place, a paradise with hunting, trees, and fishing. This paradise created big problems for women. Aside from work at home, there was nothing for women to do; money was tight, and driving distances were long and difficult. During WWII, sugar and gas were rationed; we had to use stamps to get them, and the long distances between people and towns meant conserving on gas. We didn't go anywhere very often. My story is full of events that may shock or amaze you. It's about the survival of a lonesome, only child who grew up in a very isolated area, her experiences through grade and high school. I left for a short period to work at Michigan Bell in Saginaw Michigan, returned after marrying my high school sweetheart, have lived and farmed in the area since. I hope my love for the AuSable River comes through these stories also in my writing of this memoir of my early life.

For author Alexander Rassogianis, spending the summers with his family in southwestern Michigan during his school years in the 1950s brought the greatest joy and the fondest memories. In Return to Glenlord, he reminisces about this era of old-fashioned resorts, quaint little cottages, sandy beaches, long walks on country roads, and the permeating scent of pine. In this memoir, Rassogianis recalls being a part of a vibrant Greek community that transported itself from Chicago every year. He includes anecdotes about memorable and humorous characters and events, including getting into mischief with his three buddies, falling in love six times before the age of twelve, and going on excursions to Glenlord Beach, the outdoor movie theater, the amusement park, Deer Forest, and the House of David. Return to Glenlord shares the remembrances of a carefree time and of being part of a beautiful world that no longer exists. Although the resorts and cabins of Rassogianis's youth are a thing of the past, his memories of summers spent in Stevensville, Michigan, can never be replaced.

The SideRoad Kids follows a group of boys and girls as they enter the sixth grade in a small town in Michigan's Upper Peninsula during 1957 - 58. This meandering collection of loosely-connected short stories is often humorous, poignant, and sometimes mysterious. Laugh as the kids argue over Halloween treats handed out in Brimley. Recall Dorothy's Hamburgers in Sault Ste. Marie. Follow a Sugar Island snowshoe trail as the kids look for Christmas trees. Wonder what strange blue smoke at Dollar Settlement signifies. Discover the magic hidden in April snowflakes. Although told by the kids, adults will remember their own childhood as they read about Flint, Candy, Squeaky, Katie, and their friends. "Katie, Blew, Squeaky, and Daisy grew up on farms instead of high rises and used their imagination instead of fancy gadgets to make their own fun. An entertaining read for youngsters. And parents, you might enjoy a nostalgic flashback as well. I know I did." --Allia Zobel-Nolan, author of Cat Confessions "The stories in The SideRoad Kids are often humorous. However, underlying them is a sensitive awareness that being a kid, rural or urban, then or now, is not easy. This is an enjoyable read that will enlighten today's kids about the past and rekindle memories for older readers." --Jon Stott, author of Paul Bunyan in Michigan "Sharon's stories capture the essence of childhood and growing up in a small community. The antics of The SideRoad Kids will keep you entertained and take you back to a simpler time." --Renee Glass, Senior Production Artist, Mackinac Journal "Sharon Kennedy is an amazing writer who draws you into the lives of her characters and keeps everything relatable. She makes you laugh, makes you think, and makes you want to keep reading. The SideRoad Kids is an entertaining book about a group of children growing up in Northern Michigan." --Kortny Hahn, Senior Staff Writer, Cheboygan Daily Tribune Learn more at www.AuthorSharonKennedy.com From Modern History Press www.ModernHistoryPress.com
