Excerpt from Memorials of Acadia College and Horton Academy for the Half-Century 1828-1878 The publication of this Memorial Volume has been delayed by the cares and labors connected with the te building of the College. But the book contains matter that is of permanent value; and, perhaps, it may be re ceived with greater interest because it appears some time after the occasion on which several of the papers here preserved were first presented to the public. In some instances the same facts appear in different parts of the volume; but as each writer has presented them from his own point of View, it has been thought best to let the papers stand without modification. It is quite pro bable that the Record of Graduates may not be correct in all cases; but it has been prepared with much care and after extensive correspondence. It was not intended to include changes that have taken place since the close of the year 1878. The material of the Appendix, excepting the Legislative Acts, was found among the. How are Baptists distinctive as a Christian denomination? Canadian Baptists, confronted with the question of discovering a common identity from the welter of strands of influence that make up their heritage, may infer several answers from the essays in Memory and Hope. Focussing on Baptist history in central and western Canada, Memory and Hope discusses individuals, institutions and issues that have stirred Baptists in North America for two centuries, including confessionalism and eucharistic theology and fundamentalism vs. modernism. Recurring themes include the Baptist role in education in Canada, the establishment of new churches, overseas missions and social responsibility. Essayists also examine the powerful forces that have influenced Baptist history: immigration, theology and society. Studies of missionary Samuel Stearns Day, fundamentalists Aberhart, Maxwell and Shields and social gospellers Sharpe and Shaw illustrate the diversity of ideas and personalities that have shaped and been shaped by the Baptist Church. Memory and Hope is an important resource for the history of the Baptist Church in Canada. In the issues it raises on the role of churches in the twenty-first century, it will also make a significant contribution to the study of religion in general.

"The publication of this volume celebrates thirty-seven extraordinary years of teaching at Acadia Divinity College and more years than that of dedicated service to the church. It is a joy to honor the lifetime service of Allison Trites for his ministry of teaching and service to the church. His commitment to the work of Christ has been an encouragement to all of his colleagues, fellow workers, and students, not to mention his fellow church members at the Wolfville United Baptist Church" (from the foreword). The two sections of this excellent collection of essays are "Biblical Studies" and "History and Theology, " and include contributions by the following. Timothy R. Ashley Manfred T. Brauch Daniel Goodwin Larry J. Kreitzer Richard N. Longenecker Tim McLay Andrew MacRae James R. C. Perkin Kevin Quast Alan P. F. Sell Robert S. Wilson John Tudno Williams Roy Williams R. Glenn Wooden
