Excerpt from Memoirs of the Civil War in Wales, Vol. 1 of 2: And the Marches, 1642-1649 Some years ago, while engaged in an investiga tion into the history of my native parish, I was anxious to learn whether the Castle, which forms its principal attraction, had been garrisoned during the Civil War. I found that there was no book which could give me the information I wanted, but I discovered that vast materials existed in the bound less waste of the King's Pamphlets at the British Museum, in the State Papers at the Record Office, and in private collections; and that so far as Wales was concerned it was an untrodden field. After some hesitation I resolved to attempt to contribute something towards a history of the Principality during that period. The leisure. Hours of some years have been devoted to the subject, ' and the result is now offered to the public, in the belief that it will fill a gap in the History of Wales and the Marches, and that it will not be without some in terest to my countrymen. Of the labour which this Work has involved I will not speak. Sufficient it is to say, that every pamphlet and every newspaper of the period, - many thousands in number, -all the memoirs and collections bearing on that period, andviii. Preface.
