Excerpt from Ian Maclaren the Life of the Rev. John Watson OF Dr. Watson it is most true that no man is able to show to those who knew him not what he was; no man could show this to those who knew him in a way that they would feel satisfying. His sympathy, his tenderness, his kindly humour were to those who knew him inseparable from his presence, and all attempts to describe or report him must be sadly inadequate. But for the friendship with which he honoured me and for the love I bore him, I have done my best. There is nothing in this book which is not strictly truthful and based on indisputable authority. I have thought it my duty to set him forth as he was, and to give his own views as nearly as possible in his own words. It will be seen that on important points he differed seriously from the majority in his own Church, and it was thought by many that he sometimes fell into deep in discretions. I do not agree with this View. His indis cretions were merely the frank statement of his dif ferences. He would never allow himself to be miscon ceived, and while he had the greatest patience with the opinions of others he firmly maintained the right to assert his own. Excerpt from Review of Rev. John Watson's (Ian Maclaren), "Life of the Master" As Published in McClure's Magazine (May 1900, Etc;) Dear reader do not permit yourself to accept anything about the Word Of God which is not found in the Word Of God. Man is incapable Of adding to or taking from the Word of God with out debasing the creature and dishonoring the Creator; no work of God is incomplete in any sense. If Dr. Watson can add to it with profit or take from it in wisdom, not a line of it is worth considering. Not a word from Genesis to Revelation worthy a moment's thought. If any man living can make less Obscure the Book of Revelation by the application Of reason through the sin beclouded church. Or by the introduction of natural law into the domain of the spiritual world, then discard the whole without hesita tion. There was but one way for Abel and Abraham° Moses and Elias: Peter and Paul; this was the way of faith, with God its Author and finisher. For without faith it is impossible to please Him. Excerpt from A Memoir of the Rev. John Edwards Emerson: First Pastor of the Whitefield Congregational Church in Newburyfort, Mass;, With Extracts From His Writings This memoir has been abridged with the desire of rendering it more acceptable to the general reader, and with the hope that its usefulness may be increased. Mankind are influenced more by example than precept; a life has more power than a principle. Men, before adopting a truth or system, desire to see its workings upon character, as well as listen to arguments in its favor. It is well, therefore, that a new living testimony to the practical power of Christianity should be perpetuated. Who, comparatively speaking, would have heard of James B. Taylor, Harlan Page, James Brainerd, and others that might be mentioned, had not their memoirs been published to the world? These holy men died in order to live. They, most of them, died young, in order that their influence might possess immortal youth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
