Unbeschwertes Lesevergnügen! Endlich!

Biochemistry of the Amino Acids, Second Edition, Volume II focuses on the trends in research on amino acids and biochemistry. Given considerations are incorporation of amino acids into proteins, amino acid sequences, and discovery of amino acids. The first part of the book deals with intermediary metabolism of amino acids. Particularly noted are alanine, aspartic, adenylosuccinic, hydroxyaspartic acids, and asparagine. The book also has discussions on glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, serine, and sarcosine. The processes and syntheses involved in these acids are noted. Another part of the book focuses on the formation, degradation, reactions, and conversion of acids. The processes and experiments discussed are supported by numerical analysis, and the biosynthesis of acids in microorganisms is also considered. The book also notes some disorders of amino acid metabolism in humans. These disorders include cystinuria, glycinuria, ammonemia, prolinemia, maple syrup urine disease, and homocystinuria. Discussions focus on how these diseases develop and the symptoms associated with them. The book is a vital source of data for readers interested in the study of amino acids.

Metabolic Pathways, Volume II focuses on the metabolism, biosynthesis, and catabolism of amino acids. The selection first offers information on nitrogen and carbon metabolism of amino acids. Discussions focus on amino acids linked with citric acid cycle, sulfur amino acids, proline and hydroxyproline, histidine, hydroxyamino acids, urea biosynthesis and related systems, and deamidation. The text then ponders on the biosynthesis of amino acids and related compounds and metabolism of sulfur-containing compounds. Topics include metabolism of methionine, biotin, biological importance of sulfur in animals, interconversions of glutamic acid, ornithine, and prolines, and biosynthesis of the branched-chain amino acids. The publication takes a look at the synthesis of proteins, purines and pyrimidines, and nucleotides and nucleosides, including the components of nucleotides, purine degradation, and incorporation of preformed purine compounds into nucleic acids. The selection is a valuable reference for researchers interested in the metabolism, catabolism, and biosynthesis of amino acids.

D. BOULTER and B. PARTHIER At the time of the former edition of the Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology, approximately 25 years ago, no complete plant protein amino acid sequences or nucleic acid sequences had been determined. Although the structure of DNA and its function as the genetic material had just been reported, little detail was known of the mechanism of its action, and D. G. CATCHSIDE was to write in the first chapter of the first volume of the Encyclopedia: "There is a consider able body of evidence that the gene acts as a unit of physiological action through the control of individual enzymes". No cell-free transcription and pro tein-synthesizing systems were available and the whole range of powerful meth ods of recombinant DNA technology was still to be developed. Today for the first time with plant systems, it is possible not only to describe their molecular biology but also to manipulate it, i. e. , to move from a description to a technological phase. The properties of living systems are inscribed by those of the proteins and nucleic acids which they synthesize. Proteins, due to their very large size, occur as macromolecules in colloidal solution or associated in supra-molecular colloi dal form. The colloidal state confers low thermal conductivity, low diffusion coefficients and high viscosity, properties which buffer a biological system from the effects of a changing environment. Biological systems not only have great stability, but also the capacity to reproduce.
