Excerpt from Essentials in Mechanical Drawing This brief treatment of the essentials of mechanical drawing is designed to give instruction in the rudiments of plan drawing as it occurs in everyday life, so that the student will be able to read and understand ordinary drawings and be able to do ordinary mechanical sketching. The book should be of value also to one who is about to take a longer course in drawing, for it aims to correct the common mistakes of the beginner. Where work is given without the regular instruments, it is well to provide the students with small drawing boards about 12 X 18 inches in size, together with a T square. This equipment makes for more rapid and accurate work. The bottom edge of the drawing board can be planed square with the left side so that the T square may be used for both horizontal and vertical lines. The lists of exercises offered are merely suggestive. Where possible it is best to have drawings made from the object itself rather than from another drawing. This is possible even in the drafting room, in institutions where shop work is given, for one can there secure enough joints or other woodwork so that at least every two students will have the object on the drafting table. Excerpt from Mechanical Drawing and Practical Drafting I hope that this book will prove to be all that I think it to be. I am exceedingly anxious to make any desirable improvements, and would therefore welcome suggestions from either the teacher or the man in the office. Several important changes have been made in this edition. Material has been added which should improve the course presented, and every effort has been made to make the work as it should be. It is hoped that these changes and additions will prove valuable to both the teacher and student and add greatly to the efficiency of the book as a means of properly imparting a knowledge of the subject which it represents. This text is especially intended for use in the class room. Every effort has been made to produce an ideal text for this purpose. Respectfully, Charles H. Sampson. Excerpt from Mechanical Drawing Working Drawings The course maybe given without home-work, but the author is a firm believer in home - work. Where such work is required, the results immediately aimed at are better, and in many indirect ways the subject is found to have a higher educational value. The author has, therefore, been rather liberal in sugges tions for outside work, and has added extra plates for the special benefit of the ambitious student. Excerpt from Mechanical Drawing: First Year There are two methods of representing an object. First, when viewed from one point only, (fig. Second, as it appears when viewed from points directly opposite it, (fig. The first method is called Perspective Drawing, and Fm m. Is useful in showing an object as it naturally appears to the eye. The length, breadth, thickness and form can usually be seen in one view but not in their true size and shape. In the second method we see the true size and shape of but one side of the object at a time, so that only two of the three dimensions can be shown in a single view. Hence it is necessary to make at least two views of an ob j ect. Many things. Require three or more views to give one a clear conception of them. Excerpt from Mechanical Drawing for Trade Schools That faculty of imagining, that mental picturing so necessary to the good draftsman or designer, can be developed within every stu dent. It is a part of his development, just as an understanding of the meaning (either definite or conventional) of each line of a drawing is a part of his development. Convinced of this fact, the author has arranged these lessons in a manner which he believes will attract and hold the attention of the student. Each lesson will guide the student 'by easy steps, illustrate some fundamental point in Mechanical Drawing, and work as a whole towards the development of the creative draftsman.
