The International Workshop on Time Reversal Invariance and Parity Violation in Neutron Reactions focused on the study of parity violation (PV) and time reversal invariance (TRI) in neutron physics. Emphasis was placed on measurements with polarized neutron beams and polarized targets as well as on the implication of recent theoretical developments for the future progress of this rapidly developing and increasingly important field of research.

The study of parity violation in total (n, [gamma]) cross sections on 139La and 117Sn targets was performed at the LANSCE pulsed neutron source using longitudinally polarized neutrons and a BaF2 detector. The effect of parity nonconservation in the 139La(n, [gamma]) reaction for the resonance at E{sub n}=0.73 eV was confirmed. New results for p-wave resonances in the 117Sn(n, [gamma]) reaction were obtained. A comparison between the capture and transmission techniques is presented. 12 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab.

The book contains the Proceedings of the 2010 Conference of the Italian Systems Society. Papers deal with the interdisciplinary study of processes of changing related to a wide variety of specific disciplinary aspects. Classical attempts to deal with them, based on generalising approaches used to study the movement of bodies and environmental influence, have included ineffective reductionistic simplifications. Indeed changing also relates, for instance, to processes of acquisition and varying properties such as for software; growing and aging biological systems; learning/cognitive systems; and socio-economic systems growing and developing through innovations. Some approaches to modelling such processes are based on considering changes in structure, e.g., phase-transitions. Other approaches are based on considering (1) periodic changes in structure as for processes of self-organisation; (2) non-periodic but coherent changes in structure, as for processes of emergence; (3) the quantum level of description. Papers in the book study the problem considering its transdisciplinary nature, i.e., systemic properties studied per se and not within specific disciplinary contexts. The aim of these studies is to outline a transdisciplinary theory of change in systemic properties. Such a theory should have simultaneous, corresponding and eventually hierarchical disciplinary aspects as expected for a general theory of emergence. Within this transdisciplinary context, specific disciplinary research activities and results are assumed to be mutually represented as within a philosophical and conceptual framework based on the theoretical centrality of the observer and conceptual non-separability of context and observer, related to logically open systems and Quantum Entanglement. Contributions deal with such issues in interdisciplinary ways considering theoretical aspects and applications from Physics, Cognitive Science, Biology, Artificial Intelligence, Economics, Architecture, Philosophy, Music and Social Systems.

I'll discuss the experiments in which parity violation has been measured in low energy neutron-nucleus scattering. The interest is two-fold: to understand how parity violation in the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction manifests itself in a complicated many-body system and to show that the large enhancements observed make this a good laboratory to search for violations of TRI. Further, the procedure of relating the measured parity violating asymmetries to the under-lying NN interaction will be important in order to make the same connection in violation of TRI (or in limits). First, I'll make brief comments on some relevant features of low energy neutron scattering and then review the existing measurements of parity violation. I'll try to explain, at least qualitatively, the origin of the large enhancements observed. Finally, I'll describe the TRIPLE collaboration program to study parity violation and discuss planned experiments to search for violations of TRI. 23 refs.

Results from experiments that measure parity-violating longitudinal asymmetries in the scattering of epithermal neutrons from compound-nuclear resonances at the Manuel Lujan Neutron Scattering Center at Los Alamos are discussed. Parity non-conserving asymmetries have been observed for many p-wave resonances in a single target. Measurements were performed on several nuclei in the mass region of A-100 and A-230. The statistical model of the compound nucleus provides a theoretical basis for extracting mean-squared matrix elements from the experimental asymmetry data, and for interpreting the mean-squared matrix elements. The constraints on the weak meson-exchange couplings calculated from the compound-nucleus asymmetry data agree qualitatively with the results from few-body and light-nuclei experiments. For all nuclei but 232Th measured asymmetries have random signs. For 232Th eight of eight measured asymmetries are positive. This phenomenon is discussed in terms or doorway models.
