This measurement procedure defines a method for measuring the electromagnetic radiation from an integrated circuit (IC). The IC being evaluated is mounted on an IC test printed circuit board (PCB) that is clamped to a mating port (referred to as a wall port) cut in the top or bottom of a TEM or wideband TEM (GTEM) cell. The test board is not in the cell as in the conventional usage but becomes a part of the cell wall. This method is applicable to any TEM or GTEM cell modified to incorporate the wall port; however, the measured RF voltage is affected by the septum to test board (wall) spacing. This procedure was developed using a 1 GHz TEM cell with a septum to wall spacing of 45 mm and a GTEM cell with average septum to wall spacing of 45 mm over the port area. Other cells may not produce identical spectral output but may be used for comparative measurements, subject to their frequency and sensitivity limitations. A conversion factor may allow comparisons between data measured on TEM or GTEM cells with different septum to wall spacing. The IC test board controls the geometry and orientation of the operating IC relative to the cell and eliminates any connecting leads within the cell (these are on the backside of the board, which is outside the cell). For the TEM cell, one of the 50 ohm ports is terminated with a 50 ohm load. The other 50 ohm port for a TEM cell, or the single 50 ohm port for a GTEM cell, is connected to the input of a spectrum analyzer or receiver that measures the RF emissions emanating from the IC and coupled onto the septum of the TEM cell (see Figure 1).

Electromagnetic compatibility is concerned with the generation, transmission, and reception of electromagnetic energy. The book discusses about the basic principles of electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) including causes, events, and mitigation of issues. The design procedures for EMI filter, the types of filters, and filter implementation methods are explained. The simulation of printed circuit board designs using different software and a step-by-step method is discussed in detail. This book addresses the gap between theory and practice using case studies with design, experiments, and supporting analysis. Features: Discusses about the basic principles of EMI/EMC including causes and events Makes readers understand the problems in different applications because of EMI/EMC and the reducing methods Explores real-world case studies with code to provide hands-on experience Reviews design strategies for mitigation of noise Includes MATLAB, PSPICE, and ADS simulations for designing EMI Filter circuits. The book is aimed at graduate students and researchers in electromagnetics, circuit and systems, and electrical engineering.

This part of SAE J1113 specifies TEM cell test methods and procedures for testing the electromagnetic immunity of electronic components (DUTs) for passenger cars, commercial vehicles and similar applications. Methods using the constant cross-section TEM cell (Crawford TEM) and the flared cross-section TEM cell (wideband TEM) are discussed in the document. The electromagnetic disturbance considered in this part of SAE J1113 will be limited to continuous narrowband electromagnetic fields. TEM cells produce both electric and magnetic fields simultaneously. The test is directly applicable to DUTs whose height is less than 1/3 the septum height; somewhat larger modules can be tested with conditions applied. The Crawford TEM and wideband TEM cell may be used for testing within the 1/3 height condition without demonstrating field uniformity within the cell, if the test set-up complies with the other provisions of this standard. This test can be used for two purposes: a. Testing the immunity of DUTs with major field coupling to the DUT and wiring harness;b. Testing the immunity of DUTs with major field coupling to the DUT. The methods defined in this document have some significant differences from ISO 11452-3. Careful deliberation has been given to the need to diverge from the international standard. The primary differences are the method of bringing leads from the DUT out of the TEM cell and the inclusion of the wideband TEM cell. Immunity measurements of complete vehicles are generally only possible by the vehicle manufacturer. The reasons, for example, are the high costs of a vehicle sized absorber lined chamber, preserving the secrecy of prototypes or the large number of different vehicle models. Therefore, for research, development and quality control a laboratory measuring method shall be applied by the component manufacturer.J1113/24 is being canceled in favor of ISO 11452-4.

"Signal voltages and currents in integrated circuits (ICs) and on printed circuit board (PCB) traces produce electric and magnetic fields that can induce common-mode currents on larger radiating structures. In the first part of this dissertation, a TEM cell measurement method employing a hybrid to separate the electric field coupling and the magnetic field coupling is described. The results of this measurement can be used to determine an effective source voltage and capacitance that characterize an IC's or PCB's ability to drive common mode currents onto cables or enclosures due to electric-field coupling. This information can then be used to estimate the resulting radiated emissions. In the second part, a closed-form equation is developed to estimate the maximum radiated fields from a voltage source driving a board relative to an attached cable over a ground plane. This equation is evaluated for various cable and board geometries by comparing the estimates to full wave simulations. The maximum radiation calculated using the closed-form expression generally predicts the peak full wave simulation results within a few dB for various board sizes and cable lengths. The third part describes a technique for using TEM cell measurement results to quantify the ability of boards to drive common-mode currents on cables due to magnetic field coupling. The maximum radiated emissions due to magnetic field coupling can then be estimated accordingly"--Abstract, leaf iv

"The IEC 61967-2 integrated circuit radiated emissions test standard describes the use of the TEM cell to measure near-field emissions from an IC. This test requires a printed circuit board (PCB) to mount to IC. The IEC guidelines allow for flexibility in the design of this test PCB which may cause variations in the measured emissions. This thesis studies the impact of typical variations in the PCB design on the measured emissions"--Abstract, leaf iii
