We report on the measurement of[ital W] boson mass from a direct determination of the ratio of the transverse masses of[ital W] and[ital Z] using the D[null] detector at the Fermilab Tevatron[ital p][ital[anti p]] collider operating at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV. The analysis is a preliminary result based on a partial data sample of 13[ital pb][sup -1] using[ital W][r-arrow][ital e][nu] and[ital Z][r-arrow][ital ee] decays.

We present results from W and Z boson production in proton-antiproton collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV using the CDF detector. We measure the W and Z cross sections times lepton branching ratio, [sigma](p{bar p} → W)·B(W → l[nu]{sub l}) and [sigma](p {bar p} → Z)· B(Z → k+l−) l = e, [mu]. We also measure the ratio: R{sub l} = [sigma] · B(W → l[nu]{sub l})/[sigma] · B(Z → ll). From R{sub l}, we extract the W electron and muon branching ratios, BR(W → l[nu]{sub l}, and the total W width, [Gamma]{sub W}. In addition, high transverse mass W →e[nu]{sub e}, candidates provide an alternate, direct measurement of [Gamma]{sub W}.

This dissertation describes an alternative method of measuring the W boson mass in D0 experiment. Instead of extracting M{sub W} from the fitting of W → e[nu] fast Monte Carlo simulations to W → e[nu] data as in the standard method, we make the direct fit of transverse mass between W → e[nu] data and Z → ee data. One of the two electrons from Z boson is treated as a neutrino in the calculation of transverse mass. In ratio method, the best fitted scale factor corresponds to the ratio of W and Z boson mass (M{sub W}/M{sub Z}). Given the precisely measured Z boson mass, W mass is directly fitted from W → e[nu] and Z → ee data. This dissertation demonstrates that ratio method is a plausible method of measuring the W boson mass. With the 1 fb−1 D0 Run IIa dataset, ratio method gives M{sub W} = 80435 ± 43(stat) ± 26(sys) MeV.

This work develops novel data analysis techniques enabling aspects of the Standard Model of particle physics to be tested with unprecedented precision using data from the DZero experiment at the high energy “Tevatron” proton-antiproton collider at Fermilab, Chicago. Vesterinen's measurements of the transverse momentum of Z bosons using the novel variable φ* have exposed deficiencies in the current state-of-the-art theoretical predictions for vector boson production at hadron colliders. These techniques are now being used in the experiments at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and have stimulated considerable interest in the theoretical particle physics community. Furthermore, Vesterinen's measurements of the cross sections for the production of pairs of vector bosons (WZ and ZZ) are to date the most precise ever made.
