A gamma-ray production cross section measurement facility is described in this report. This facility uses a LINAC as a neutron source and a Ge(Li) as the gamma detector. The facility was used to measure the gamma-ray production cross sections of nitrogen and oxygen for incident neutron energies of up to 16 MeV. The results are tabulated, graphed, and compared with other measurements. (Author).

Gamma-ray production cross sections were measured for the 12C(n, x gamma) and 14N(n, x gamma) reactions from 2.0- to 20.7-MeV neutron energy using the Rad Tech Linac source. The carbon cross sections are presented for both high neutron resolution and ten broad neutron groups spanning the energy range. Cross sections for the discrete gamma-ray peaks from nitrogen are presented in twelve broad neutron groups as are the discrete plus continuum cross sections obtained by unfolding the gamma-ray spectra. The measured cross sections generally agree with the evaluations and with previous measurements.

An integral experiment, designed to provide high-sensitivity tests for gamma-ray production and neutron-scattering cross sections, has been performed. The experiment is based on the white-source, pulsed-neutron, time-of-flight method with the sample at the detector end of the flight path. Measurements were made with a single 5 x 5 cm cylindrical NE-213 detector positioned at 30, 55, 90, and 125 degrees relative to the incident neutron beam. Pulse-shape discrimination was used to separate neutron and gamma-ray counts. Measured count rates due to secondary gamma rays and scattered neutrons from two sample materials, graphite and liquid nitrogen, are reported here as functions of time and incident neutron energy. Differences between calculated gamma-ray and neutron count rates and those reported here should be readily interpreted in terms of specific cross-section deficiencies at well defined incident neutron energies in the 1.5- to 20-MeV range. The total absorption cross-section (or coefficient) curves of nitrogen and oxygen recently measured in the 580-1050 A wavelength region using a Hopfield helium continuum background light source are discussed in relation to the absorption of solar radiation in the earth's upper atmosphere. Similar measurements using the hydrogen many-line spectrum background in the 13751450A region and the 1620-1640A region of the oxygen Schumann-Runge continuum are also described. A table listing cross-sections of nitrogen and oxygen at all of the important solar emission lines in the 580-1050A region is given. Measurements are compared with values given by others where possible. (Author).
