This work presents simultaneous branching fraction measurements of the decay modes [tau]- 2!K- n[pi]0[nu][tau] with n = 0,1,2,3 and [tau]- 2![pi]- n[pi]0[nu][tau] with n = 3,4. The analysis is based on a data sample of 427 x 106 [tau]+[tau]- pairs recorded with the BABAR detector, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 464.4 fb-1. The measured values are [beta]([tau]- 2!K-[nu][tau]) = (6.57 ± 0.03 ± 0.11) x 10-3, [beta]([tau]- 2!K-[pi]0[nu][tau]) = (4.61 ± 0.03 ± 0.11) x 10-3, [beta]([tau]- 2!K- [pi]0[pi]0[nu][tau]) = (5.05 ± 0.17 ± 0.44) x 10-4, [beta]([tau]- 2!K-[pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[nu][tau]) = (1.31 ± 0.43 ± 0.40) x 10-4, [beta]([tau]0 2![pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[nu][tau]) = (1.263 ± 0.008 ± 0.078) x 10-2 and [beta]([tau]0 2![pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[nu][tau]) = (9.6 ± 0.5 ± 1.2) x 10-4, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. All measurements are compatible with the current world averages whereas the uncertainties are significantly smaller by a factor of up to five. The determination of [beta]([tau]0 2![pi]-[pi]0[pi]0[pi]0[pi]0v[tau]) is the first measurement of this branching fraction. Measurements of the branching fractions for the Cabibbo favored decays tau− .-->. rho− .-->. .pi.−.nu./sub tau/ and the Cabibbo suppressed decay mode tau− .-->. K*− (892).nu./sub tau/ are presented. The energy dependence of the tautau− production cross section is obtained for the decays tau− .-->. rho−.nu./sub tau/ and these spectra agree well with the classification of the tau− as a spin-1/2 point particle. Fits to the production cross section yield a measurement of M/sub tau/ = (1787 +- 10) MeV/c2 for the tau mass. Ninety-five percent confidence upper limits for the forbidden decay tau− .-->. K*−(1430).nu./sub tau/ and the tau neutrino mass are presented.

The II International Workshop on Tau Lepton Physics was held in Ohio, USA in September 1992. Its purpose is to gather the experts on tau lepton physics to examine the current understanding of the tau lepton physics and to assess future prospects. A particular emphasis of the Workshop was a detailed examination of the '1-prong problem': the discrepancy between the inclusive measurement of one-charged-particle decay branching ratio and the sum of the exclusive decays. The Workshop also stimulated new ideas on tests of the Standard Model using the third generation lepton and assessed the future prospects of the lepton physics.
