This thesis describes a measurement of the differential top quark pair production cross section for top quarks with high transverse momentum (pt) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The measurement is performed using data collected by the CMS experiment during the 2016 data-taking period, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The measurement is performed using events where one top quark decays hadronically and is reconstructed as a single large-radius t jet with pt > 400 GeV, while the other top quark decays leptonically to a b jet, an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. Jet substructure techniques are used to identify the large-radius jet as a t jet candidate. The measurement demonstrates that current simulations overpredict the rate of top quark pair production at high pt, providing valuable feedback on the accuracy of current simulation.

This thesis presents the first experimental calibration of the top-quark Monte-Carlo mass. It also provides the top-quark mass-independent and most precise top-quark pair production cross-section measurement to date. The most precise measurements of the top-quark mass obtain the top-quark mass parameter (Monte-Carlo mass) used in simulations, which are partially based on heuristic models. Its interpretation in terms of mass parameters used in theoretical calculations, e.g. a running or a pole mass, has been a long-standing open problem with far-reaching implications beyond particle physics, even affecting conclusions on the stability of the vacuum state of our universe. In this thesis, this problem is solved experimentally in three steps using data obtained with the compact muon solenoid (CMS) detector. The most precise top-quark pair production cross-section measurements to date are performed. The Monte-Carlo mass is determined and a new method for extracting the top-quark mass from theoretical calculations is presented. Lastly, the top-quark production cross-sections are obtained – for the first time – without residual dependence on the top-quark mass, are interpreted using theoretical calculations to determine the top-quark running- and pole mass with unprecedented precision, and are fully consistently compared with the simultaneously obtained top-quark Monte-Carlo mass.

This book introduces the reader to the field of jet substructure, starting from the basic considerations for capturing decays of boosted particles in individual jets, to explaining state-of-the-art techniques. Jet substructure methods have become ubiquitous in data analyses at the LHC, with diverse applications stemming from the abundance of jets in proton-proton collisions, the presence of pileup and multiple interactions, and the need to reconstruct and identify decays of highly-Lorentz boosted particles. The last decade has seen a vast increase in our knowledge of all aspects of the field, with a proliferation of new jet substructure algorithms, calculations and measurements which are presented in this book. Recent developments and algorithms are described and put into the larger experimental context. Their usefulness and application are shown in many demonstrative examples and the phenomenological and experimental effects influencing their performance are discussed. A comprehensive overview is given of measurements and searches for new phenomena performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. This book shows the impressive versatility of jet substructure methods at the LHC.

25 years after the top quark's discovery, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN produces proton-proton collision data on unprecedented scales at unprecedented energies - and has heralded an era of top-quark precision measurements. The production of a top-quark pair in association with a photon ($t bar{t} gamma$) gives access to the electromagnetic top-photon coupling, one of the fundamental properties of the top quark. Various extensions of the Standard Model predict modifications of the coupling strength or structure, and deviations from the Standard Model prediction of the $t bar{t} gamma$ pr...

The cross section for pair production of top quarks (t-tbar) with high transverse momenta is measured in pp collisions, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with sqrt(s) = 8 TeV in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse-femtobarns. The measurement is performed using lepton+jets events, where one top quark decays semileptonically, while the second top quark decays to a hadronic final state. The hadronic decay is reconstructed as a single, large-radius jet, and identified as a top quark candidate using jet substructure techniques. The integrated cross section and the differential cross sections as a function of top quark pt and rapidity are measured at particle level within a fiducial region related to the detector-level requirements and at parton level. The particle-level integrated cross section is found to be sigma[t-tbar] = 0.499 +/- 0.035 (stat+syst) +/- 0.095 (theory) +/- 0.013 (lumi) pb for top quark pt> 400 GeV. The parton-level measurement is sigma[t-tbar] = 1.44 +/- 0.10 (stat+syst) +/- 0.29 (theory) +/- 0.04 (lumi) pb. The integrated and differential cross section results are compared to predictions from several event generators.

In this thesis the measurement of production cross section of top-quark pairs in association with a photon in proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 8 TeV is presented. The data was recorded at the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2012. This measurement aims to extend our knowledge of top quark properties and help to test consistency of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. Data-driven methods are used to estimate the photon identification efficiency and purity. The measured cross-section agrees with the standard model expectation.

I present a search for new massive particles decaying to a pair of top quarks with the CMS detector at the LHC, using 36 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data recorded in 2016, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. In the high mass ranges accessible by the LHC at these energies, the top quarks are produced with high transverse momenta: the products of hadronically decaying top quarks are reconstructed as a single jet. Specific reconstruction algorithms and selections are employed to address the identification of boosted top quark signatures. The search is performed by measuring the invariant mass distribution of the top-quark pair and testing for deviations from the expected Standard Model background. The results are presented in terms of expected upper limits on the production cross section of several models, including those of Randall-Sundrum Kaluza-Klein gluon and Z′ boson production. The results are then compared with those of previous searches.

The cross section for pair production of top quarks ($tar{t}$) with high transverse momenta is measured in pp collisions, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with √s=8 TeV in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1. The particle-level integrated cross section is found to be ?$tar{t}$ = 0.499 ± 0.035(stat+syst) ± 0.095(theo) ± 0.013(lumi) pb for top quark pT > 400 GeV. The parton-level measurement is ?$tar{t}$ = 1.44 ± 0.10(stat+syst) ± 0.29(theo) ± 0.04(lumi) pb. Lastly, the integrated and differential cross section results are compared to predictions from several event generators.
