Williams, a reporter for the Vulture, is assigned to cover the murder trial of Max Hensig, a German bacteriologist accused of poisoning his wife in Amityville Hensig proclaims his innocence: why would a brilliant man like he, who knows hundreds of ways of slowly poisoning someone and leaving no trace, use a stupid and easily traceable method of murder as arsenic? He makes a good point, but Williams finds Hensig a reprehensible and frightening man, remorseless and with no regard for human life.

Algernon Henry Blackwood was an English novelist and short story writer, and among the most prolific ghost story writers in the history of the genre. The son of a preacher, Blackwood had a life-long interest in the supernatural, the occult, and spiritualism, and firmly believed that humans possess latent psychic powers. Lovecraft wrote about Blackwood: "He is the one absolute and unquestioned master of weird atmosphere." His powerful story "The Willows," which effectively describes another dimension impinging upon our own, was reckoned by Lovecraft to be not only "foremost of all" Blackwood's tales but the best "weird tale" of all time. Play: Karma; a reincarnation play Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) was an English short story writer and novelist, one of the most prolific writers of ghost stories in the history of the genre. Though Blackwood wrote a number of horror stories, his most typical work seeks less to frighten than to induce a sense of awe. Good examples are the novels The Centaur, which climaxes with a traveler's sight of a herd of the mythical creatures; and Julius LeVallon and its sequel The Bright Messenger, which deal with reincarnation and the possibility of a new, mystical evolution in human consciousness.
