Max Greenwood is a fairly typical 13 year-old boy who lives with his parents and older sister Maureen, in a modern house in suburbia. He does well at school, is polite and well behaved. This doesn't help him much when he wakes up one morning to find he has been transported back in time to June 1943. The house is the same, the street is much the same, but the year is different, and so is his name. Everyone is calling him Michael, and his family are unaware that Michael is elsewhere - although Max doesn't know where - and his doppleganger is totally out of his depth.Max has to try to fit in to a time he is only familiar with from books and television programmes. He mustn't let on that he is not who people think he is, and he cannot change history in case he can't get back to the 21st century. He experiences the utter terror of air raids, the deprivation of rationing, the simplicity of life without television, computers and microwave ovens. He feels the grief of having a friend seriously injured and wonders if his life will ever be the same again. Life during the War was much more basic. People were a lot more content with what they had, and far more willing to face a challenge with an optimistic attitude rather than the negative approach Max was more familiar with.Would Max succeed in living through the challenges of Second World War life without giving away his secret? How would he get back to 2006, and would anyone realise he'd been away?
