Discover new concepts in cardiovascular and hemodynamic functionality during pregnancy, with international experts in feto-maternal medicine. During the early stages of pregnancy, the maternal heart and circulation are subject to major gestational adaptive changes that allow for a normal course and outcome for both mother and baby. Any disruption to these processes can precipitate the onset of severe maternal and fetal complications such as preeclampsia, or intrauterine growth restriction. This invaluable reference work provides a comprehensive discussion of each aspect of the circulation. With a focus on the physiologic and pathophysiologic aspects of maternal cardiovascular function, this guide supports non-invasive assessment, management and prevention techniques for cardiovascular disease, for all stages of fetal and neonatal life. This text supports researchers and specialists in maternal-fetal medicine, whilst providing a key grounding in the topic, for trainees wishing to be at the cutting edge of theories and research.

The objective The aim of this study is to assess maternal hemodynamics immediately in the postpartum period, and also after 2 and 6 months, in the parturients who were diagnosed with preeclampsia and eclampsia and to evaluate the long- term risks of developing heart dysfunction, heart failureDesign Prospective observational case-control study Population 90 postpartum women after mild and severe preeclampsia and eclampsia (main group) and 55 patients after an uncomplicated pregnancy (control group). The parameters of maternal hemodynamics were recorded on 1,3,5,9,14 day postpartum period, as well as after 2 and 6 months after delivery. Indicators of the control group compared with the hemodynamic parameters in nonpregnant patients of reproductive age without somatic diseases (30 cases). Methods The following indicators were assessed by echocardiography: end-systolic volume (ESV), end-diastolic (EDV), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), stroke index (SI) and cardiac index (CI), mean velocity of circumferential fiber shortening (MVCF), heart rate (HR), mean blood pressure (MBP) and systemic vascular resistance (SVR).Results After uncomplicated pregnancy on the third day we observed increase in the cardiac parameters (SV, CO, SI, CI) and the simultaneous decrease in SVR demostratedby reduction in vascular resistance in carotid, ophthalmic and renal arteries as compared to non-pregnant patients (P

This book gathers together contributions from internationally renowned authors in the field of cardiovascular systems and provides crucial insight into the importance of sex- and gender-concepts during the analysis of patient data. This innovative title is the first to offer the elements necessary to consider sex-related properties in both clinical and basic studies regarding the heart and circulation on multiscale levels (i.e. molecular, cellular, electrophysiologically, neuroendocrine, immunoregulatory, organ, allometric, and modeling). Observed differences at (ultra)cellular and organ level are quantified, with focus on clinical relevance and implications for diagnosis and patient management. Since the cardiovascular system is of vital importance for all tissues, Sex-Specific Analysis of Cardiovascular Function is an essential source of information for clinicians, biologists, and biomedical investigators. The wide spectrum of differences described in this book will also act as an eye-opener and serve as a handbook for students, teachers, scientists and practitioners.

Provide the best care possible with expert insight and clinically relevant coverage of the physiologic changes that occur throughout all major periods of the perinatal experience — prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and neonatal. Maternal, Fetal & Neonatal Physiology: A Clinical Perspective, 4th Edition gives you a solid foundation for assessment and therapeutic interventions, featuring an emphasis on the evolving interrelationships between mother, fetus, and neonate and adaptations of preterm and term infants to the extrauterine environment. Solid coverage of the physiologic bases for assessment and therapeutic interventions make this an ideal resource for advanced practice. Synthesis of the latest research studies and evidence-based practice provides vital data on normal physiologic changes during the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods; anatomic and functional development of the fetus; and developmental physiology of preterm and term neonates. Pharmacology tables offer quick access to key pharmacology information and drug effects with clinical examples. Coverage of pathophysiology and interventions for the pregnant woman, fetus, and newborn for selected abnormal events provides a solid understanding of physiologic adaptations and developmental physiology relating to major body systems and metabolic processes. Comprehensive tables, diagrams, and illustrations highlight important concepts and summarize key information Thoroughly updated content offers the very latest evidence-based information, contemporary research, and clinical developments related to maternal, fetal, and neonatal physiology. New coverage on the late pre-term infant provides the most current practice guidelines to promote quality care. Expanded discussions of reproductive processes reflect cutting-edge research and the clinical implications of physiologic and genetic effects brought to bear from both the female and the male. Extensive and reliable web sources allow for further study or checking for updated information. New NICHD standard definitions on fetal monitoring enable you to identify fetal heart rate patterns using standardized nomenclature.
