Excerpt from A d104-Book of Materia Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics The book is the fruit of some twenty years' experience in teach ing therapeutics and clinical medicine, and many years of private and institutional practice. It has been my effort to embody as much as possible of this experience in a condensed, carefully classified, and usable form. Above everything else, I desire this book to be practical rather than theoretical. It is important not only that the student should acquire the largest amount pos sible of knowledge of the remedies which he expects to use in the practice of medicine, but also that this knowledge should be systematically and logically arranged, so that it may become immediately available. I believe that the classification which I have adopted particularly lends itself to that end, and that it will greatly facilitate the study of this important branch of medicine. While the needs of the student have been kept in the fore ground, I have not forgotten the demands which are made upon it by the practising physician. I have, therefore, endeavored to make the subject-matter as complete and as detailed as the size of such a work will permit, and to give Special prominence to the therapeutic sections. In this field I have drawn largely upon my own experience, not forgetting the larger mine of current medical literature.more or less widespread employment, have been accorded a place. Excerpt from The American Eclectic Materia Medica and Therapeutics I do not think that any one can know what Eclecticism is unless he has studied it from the beginning. It is wonderful what a mass of material the fathers had gathered together, and it is a matter of equal interest to note the evolution of our present practice - Spe cific medication - from this. The reader may think it strange, but three-fourths of modern homoeopathy is from this source, and nine tenths of modern Eclecticism. Excerpt from Materia Medica; Pharmacology; Therapeutics Prescription Writing: For Students and Practitioners Therapeutics is the science of the use of remedial measures. When a physician orders a patient to bed, he employs a thera peutie measure. Also when he orders a cold bath, a cathartic, or the application of a mustard plaster; or when he applies a splint to a broken arm, or removes an inflamed appendix, or sits by the bed and calms a nervous patient. Preventive medicine goes a step further than remedial medicine, in that it designs to prevent the appearance or spread of disease. The main therapeutic and preventive measures may be grouped as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Lectures on Materia Medica and Therapeutics: Delivered in the College of Physicians and Surgeons, of the University of the State of New York BY the Materia Medica, in its largest sense, is meant that branch of Medical Science which treats of the history, preparation, properties, and effects upon the living system, in health and disease, of all the various agents which are used for the prevention or cure of disease. It may, therefore, be considered as including two distinct departments - viz. First, What may be called strict Materia Medica, embracing simply an account of the history and properties - physical and chemical - of medicinal agents, and of their effects on the system in health. Second, Therapeutics, That which relates to the effects of these agents in their applications to the management of disease. It is in this extended sense that I propose to consider it in the following course of lectures; and I shall, therefore, besides giving you a description of the various properties of medicines, endeavor to lay before you the general principles which are to govern you in their use. There are several points of view in which medicines are generally considered in the books - viz. Their natural history - their physical, their chemical, and finally, their therapeutical properties. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Materia Medica, Therapeutics and Pharmacology Thanks to careful and competent training among pharmacists, the skilful preparation and dispensing Of drugs relieve the physi cian of much responsibility; yet he Should be keenly sensible Of the fact that the larger share Of public confidence is reposed in him, and by diligent study of the subject endeavor to command the minutiae Of pharmacology, holding himself morally accountable for errors quite possible in the druggist's dispensary. It may not be irrelevant to add that in all medical procedure a sympathetic yet perfectly controlled nature, ready tact, and sterling common sense are cardinal requisites to professional triumph, it being gene rally true, as was long since Observed by Hufeland, that success ful treatment requires only one-third science and two-thirds savoir faire. Excerpt from Pharmacology and Therapeutics In revising White's Materia Medica and Therapeutics to bring it into harmony with the United States Pharmacopoeia, so much additional matter has been introduced into the five American editions that it seemed advisable to re-write the book. The eighth decennial revision of the Pharmacopoeia has given the many advances in the subjects here treated have necessitated the division of the work into two dis tinct parts, the first being devoted to Materia Medica and Pharmacy, and this, the second, to Pharmacology and Thera peutics. It is hoped that this natural separation of the subjects will be acceptable to the physician and the student. In the present work the classification employed is based on'jtqie par ticular physiological systems upon which the various drugs or other agents principally act. There is a complete list of drugs and preparations, without special description, except as to dosage, and very elaborate accounts of their physiological action and therapeutics are given. In these descriptions the effort has been made to present the latest views of the highest authorities in these departments, and to render the book as practically use ful as possible by full details regarding treatment. The two works combined offer, it is believed, a very complete and up to - date presentation of the whole subject of Materia Medica and Therapeutics.
