We mounted, and sped our course through a chain of diluvial hills, and over the wooded heights of Adams county, with light hearts. A short ride brought us to the vicinity of the overseer's house and the negro quar ters, that fringe the beautiful planta tions in the neighborhood of the town. As we were admiring these scenes, the shrill matin-bell pealed, reminding the sooty inmates of the huts that the hour was approaching for the renewal of their daily toil. In a moment, as if by the wand of a magician, the curly heads of hun dreds, old and young, male and female, issued out from the doors of their quarters, and as they inhaled the pure southerly atmosphere, they sent forth a whoop or a song of gladness at the sight of a brilliant sun.
