Excerpt from Ohio's Timber Harvest Revealed in Stumps Timber is an important resource in Ohio, and cutting records are an essential part of a forest resource appraisal. However, finding out just how much timber is cut in the State during any one year is a big job. Occasionally in the past, wood-using industries have been surveyed to determine the volume cut by species and product, but the variety of industries, the large number of small Operations (including individual farmers) and lack of systematic records at small mills, makes an industry production survey difficult and costly. Production varies from year to year, so an industry survey for a particular year may not be representative. Moreover, an industry survey does not give direct information on size of timber cut, acreage cutover, source of the timber, or kind of stand from which timber came. These difficulties have prompted consideration of other ways to obtain cutting information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Timber Resources of Ohio A resurvey of the timber resources of Ohio was made in 1966 and 1967 by the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, approximately 16 years after the initial forest survey. In this resurvey, the State of Ohio provided an appropria tion of to intensify the forest survey in the heavily forested portions of the State. Also, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Bureau of Forestry and Reclamation, assisted in the collection of data on timber removal and timber-products output, as well 'as through consultation with Forest Service personnel. Excerpt from The Small Woodland Owner in Ohio Forest land owners in the hill counties are interested in forestry. One reason for this is that wood-using markets are active in the hill region. Owners can sell small and low-quality timber as well as high-quality sawlogs. Pasturing of wood lands is not important to these owners. And because of the low value of the land, the owners do not feel so much pressure to obtain an immediate return. Hence, there is a good opportunity to carry out a successful forestry program in this area where few alternative land-use opportunities exist. Moreover, forest acreage in the hill area is likely to increase because farmland is being abandoned and allowed to revert to trees. Many owners in the hill area who indicate that they are holding the land to grow timber, are just letting the stands grow without benefit of any silvicultural treatment. It is generally conceded that better management of these stands could at least double growth and increase quality. Ownership of the forest land by individuals, corporations, or cooperative organizations who will practice forestry should be encouraged. To do this, forestry programs need to be strengthened 'in the hill area. Too many owners are unaware ofthe programs and services available to them. Much of this land is held by owners who are willing to sell if they could retain mineral rights and home sites. Excerpt from Markets for Forest Products in Southeast Georgia Certainly the most practical way to sell timber is to market the product which will net the largest return, without overcutting or other wise impairing the Opportunities for future sales. What that product may be will be determined by the quality, size, and Species composition of the timber stand and by the markets which are available. Often it develops that sales of two or more products, such as poles and saw timber, or veneer logs and pulpwood, will yield a larger aggregate return than the sale of one average - quality product. Much of the farm woodland in South east Georgia lends itself to such combined sales, but to take advantage of this fact the owners must determine what products their individual stands are capable of producing, the location of markets for such products, and the price each prospective buyer will pay. Table 2 on pages 4 and 5 lists the average prices that were paid for various species and products in February 1949. Since then, a slacken ing demand for many finished wood products and the presence of increasing amounts of timber on the market have caused a reduction in the prices being offered for stumpage and rough forest products. It should also be remembered that stand quality, topography, length of haul, and other phys ical factors all exert an influence on the price a buyer can afford to pay. For these reasons, the chief usefulness of the prices shown is for compar ing products and Species. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
