Excerpt from Markets for Forest Products in Southeast Georgia Certainly the most practical way to sell timber is to market the product which will net the largest return, without overcutting or other wise impairing the Opportunities for future sales. What that product may be will be determined by the quality, size, and Species composition of the timber stand and by the markets which are available. Often it develops that sales of two or more products, such as poles and saw timber, or veneer logs and pulpwood, will yield a larger aggregate return than the sale of one average - quality product. Much of the farm woodland in South east Georgia lends itself to such combined sales, but to take advantage of this fact the owners must determine what products their individual stands are capable of producing, the location of markets for such products, and the price each prospective buyer will pay. Table 2 on pages 4 and 5 lists the average prices that were paid for various species and products in February 1949. Since then, a slacken ing demand for many finished wood products and the presence of increasing amounts of timber on the market have caused a reduction in the prices being offered for stumpage and rough forest products. It should also be remembered that stand quality, topography, length of haul, and other phys ical factors all exert an influence on the price a buyer can afford to pay. For these reasons, the chief usefulness of the prices shown is for compar ing products and Species. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In recent years, the State has consistently ranked either fifth or sixth in the Nation in the manufacture of both lumber and veneer and among the top ten in the production of pulpwood. Georgia is also noted for the variety of its minor wood products ranging from hickory ski blanks and parts for textile machinery to fence posts. Yet, unlike some other states with well= developed forest products industries, the commercial forest land of Georgia is predominantly in small ownerships. Excerpt from The Timber Supply Situation in Georgia Georgia's forests was completed in 1936. During this period annual production of lumber in Georgia more than doubled. Pulp wood production jumped from cords in 1937 to million cords in 1954. Georgia now produces more pulpwood and lumber than any other State in the South. Since 1936, over 16 million acres of forest land have been put under organized fire protection. Pine trees have been planted on more than one-half million acres. About 8 million acres of forest land have been put under management. During the 19 years that the Naval Stores Conservation Program has been in operation, turpentining practices have steadily improved. To get an accurate measure of the impact of these events on Geor gia's timber supply, a second inventory of the State's forests was begun in July 1950. In November 1953 the last of ground survey plots was taken. The findings of this second survey furnish the back ground for an understanding of the present forest conditions in Georgia and focus attention upon the principal forest problems and what needs to be done to solve them. No attempt is made to fully evaluate the use of forests for wildlife, recreation, or grazing; these uses are dis cussed only as they affect the timber supply. Excerpt from Marketing Farm Timber in Monroe County, Georgia Georgia piedmont near the geographical center of the State. Forsyth, the county seat, is about 70 miles from Atlanta and 20 miles from.macon on a line joining the two cities. Monroe County was chosen primarily because the timber, the prevailing methods of selling timber, and the products produced from timber were judged typical of a broad surrounding area the so-called concentration yard belt. This belt, extending through the piedmont from Virginia to Mississippi, is characterized by thousands of small portable sawmills cutting low-grade pine construction.lumber. The lumber is trucked to centrally-located planing mills or concentration yards where it is sorted, dressed, and otherwise prepared for market There are four of these yards in.monroe County and several more close to its borders in adjacent counties.
