All chapters combine theory and practice with the help of global case study and research study examples to illustrate barriers and best practices. Each chapter begins with learning objectives and ends with a 'check on learning' section that ties the main points back to the core themes of the book. Chapters include a section focused on measuring progress and a box comparing international research or case studies to the North American focus of the chapter. A list of additional academic sources for students that complement each chapter is included. Building sustainability tools, techniques, and competencies cumulatively with the help of problem- and project-based learning modules, Sustainability in Transition: Principles for Developing Solutions is a comprehensive resource for learning sustainability theory and doing sustainability practice. It will be essential reading for advanced undergraduate and graduate level students who have already completed introductory sustainability classes.

Victor Silverio Posadas Hernandez explores three sets of questions: What are the investment laws in the Latin American emerging markets (LAEM) and how do they compare to those of developed countries? How heterogeneous are the implicit trading costs in the LAEM and which factors are responsible for the heterogeneity? How does the predictability of stock returns in the LAEM differ from those documented for developed markets?

The book titled "Prediction of Stock Market Index Movements with Machine Learning" focuses on the performance of machine learning methods in forecasting the future movements of stock market indexes and identifying the most advantageous methods that can be used across different stock exchanges. In this context, applications have been conducted on both developed and emerging market stock exchanges. The stock market indexes of developed countries such as NYSE 100, NIKKEI 225, FTSE 100, CAC 40, DAX 30, FTSE MIB, TSX; and the stock market indexes of emerging countries such as SSE, BOVESPA, RTS, NIFTY 50, IDX, IPC, and BIST 100 were selected. The movement directions of these stock market indexes were predicted using decision trees, random forests, k-nearest neighbors, naive Bayes, logistic regression, support vector machines, and artificial neural networks methods. Daily dataset from 01.01.2012 to 31.12.2021, along with technical indicators, were used as input data for analysis. According to the results obtained, it was determined that artificial neural networks were the most effective method during the examined period. Alongside artificial neural networks, logistic regression and support vector machines methods were found to predict the movement direction of all indexes with an accuracy of over 70%. Additionally, it was noted that while artificial neural networks were identified as the best method, they did not necessarily achieve the highest accuracy for all indexes. In this context, it was established that the performance of the examined methods varied among countries and indexes but did not differ based on the development levels of the countries. As a conclusion, artificial neural networks, logistic regression, and support vector machines methods are recommended as the most advantageous approaches for predicting stock market index movements.

This book presents a genetic algorithm that optimizes a grid template pattern detector to find the best point to trade in the SP 500. The pattern detector is based on a template using a grid of weights with a fixed size. The template takes in consideration not only the closing price but also the open, high, and low values of the price during the period under testing in contrast to the traditional methods of analysing only the closing price. Each cell of the grid encompasses a score, and these are optimized by an evolutionary genetic algorithm that takes genetic diversity into consideration through a speciation routine, giving time for each individual of the population to be optimized within its own niche. With this method, the system is able to present better results and improves the results compared with other template approaches. The tests considered real data from the stock market and against state-of-the-art solutions, namely the ones using a grid of weights which does not have a fixed size and non-speciated approaches. During the testing period, the presented solution had a return of 21.3% compared to 10.9% of the existing approaches. The use of speciation was able to increase the returns of some results as genetic diversity was taken into consideration.

This paper examines stock prices reaction to open market repurchases announcements at the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange between May 30, 1997 and October 31, 1998. This institutional scenario is a good testing ground for some theoretical hypotheses about stock repurchase announcements, because during those seventeen months taxes were imposed on capital gains but not on dividends. Using an event study methodology, we examined 110 episodes and found very small abnormal returns. Those results can not be explained by two main competing theoretical explanations. The Cumulative Abnormal Returns pattern found clearly suggests that repurchase announcements affected the behavior of stock prices in ways not described in previous studies. The CAR pattern suggests that stock prices react slowly to market information.
