As a society, we use more than 100,000 different industrial compounds to promote health and treat disease, to grow food and to access clean water. While technological developments have improved our lives, most of these compounds end up in our oceans where they threaten marine life and human health. The practice of ocean waste disposal has had a long history and was initially believed to have minimal associated costs. However, it is now clear that although we can use the oceans for cheap waste treatment, we do this at the expense of the other key benefits we derive from the sea, notably human food supplies as well as its aesthetic value (including opportunities for recreation and tourism). Many of the pollution problems of previous decades appear to have been solved in the developed world, or at least managed to minimise their environmental impacts. However, despite treatment being available for some waste products, a potent mixture of toxic compounds and other potentially harmful additions continue to enter the marine environment every day. So, have the problems of marine pollution really been solved or have we simply generated a suite of different and potentially more complex challenges? In this volume we consider marine pollution from the perspective of the historical problems that are now successfully managed or solved, the ongoing problems and the emerging challenges that we face. There is growing concern about the state of the world's oceans. The rapid growth of human populations in coastal regions has led to increasing dependence on marine resources. Beneficial features related to food supply and life style need to be balanced against the hazards presented by microbial pathogens, chemical pollutants, and toxic algal blooms. In this book, a group of experts from a range of backgrounds review the key aspects of the marine environment in relation to human health. An initial overview explains the need for integrating a range of disciplines, from physical oceanography and marine biology to molecular biology and epidemiology. Marine pollution is the harmful effect caused by the entry into the ocean of chemicals or particles. Contaminants in the Marine Environment: Modern Challenges in Marine Pollution reviews the available data in relation to CECs in the marine environment: main sources, transport pathways, distribution in seawater and sediments, bioaccumulation and biological effects, including traditional biomarkers and "omic” responses. Each chapter recaps the most relevant information about the main groups of CECs, describing the particularities and specificities of each group and focusing on the most relevant individual contaminants. Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are not regulated substances, and therefore not considered in national and international monitoring programs, with potential impact in the environment due to their continuous input, relative persistence and/or toxicity. CECs are relevant not only in continental and coastal areas close to their main sources, but also in the open sea, because some of them are capable to be transported long distances through air deposition or absorbed on particulate material. The persistence of many degradable substances in the marine environment increases when they are absorbed on particulate material/sediments and/or when they are subjected to anaerobic conditions which slow down the degradation kinetic for many contaminants. The bioaccumulation of several CECs has been confirmed in different coastal organisms; however, in general, very limited information (species and trophic levels considered) is available because most studies are mainly centered in specific coastal areas. Contaminants in the Marine Environment offers useful information about not regulated contaminants that are not considered in international monitoring programs but with potential impact in coastal and open sea areas.
