The Marine Corps conducted an initial validation study in 1981 to evaluate the predictive validity of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) against hands-on and written job performance tests. The results were presented to the Joint Service Working Group and the National Academy of Sciences Advisory Committee in briefings and in a series of CNA reports. Three occupational specialties were included in the initial Marine Corps study. These are Infantry Rifleman, with relatively low technical demands; Automotive Mechanic, with moderate technical demands, and Radio Repairer, with high technical demands. An issue about selecting test content was whether the performance tests should be primarily descriptions of the current proficiency of examinees on a representative set of job requirements, or primarily predictive in indicating how well examinees would be expected to perform on the full set of job requirements. The performance test for the riflemen was descriptive, in that the current proficiency of examinees was evaluated in a broad range of job requirements. The performance test for the radio repairer, was primarily predictive; the entire hands-on test was devoted to troubleshooting a circuit board for a new piece of equipment that none of the examinees had seen before. The predictive validity of the ASVAB was evaluated against hands-on and written performance tests and grades in the training courses for the occupational specialties.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of validating ASVAB enlistment standards against job performance, Hands-on and written proficiency tests were developed for three Marine Corps skills--Ground Radio Repair, Automotive Mechanic, and Infantry Rifleman--for use as measures of job performance. In addition, grades in skill training courses were also evaluated as possible measures of job performance. The ASVAB was shown to be a valid predictor of job performance. All three measures--hands-on tests, written tests, and training grades--were generally consistent measures of performance.

This thesis develops a method to reconfirm the relationship between an individual's Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) scores and his performance at his initial course of instruction in the Marine Corps. Validity coefficients are developed to ensure that the ASVAB correctly predicts success at these initial training courses. Once the ASVAB is shown to correctly predict success at Marine Corps courses, the thesis concentrates on two statistical methods to explore the classification of youths into Marine jobs. The first method, discriminant analysis, is used as a check of the current classification process. Next, a tree based regression method is used to evaluate if further employment of ASVAB scores can more appropriately place trainees into Marine Corps jobs. These methods ultimately afford the Marine Corps an opportunity to use existing information to enhance the successful classification of young Marines into appropriate courses, thereby increasing their chances of successfully completing their initial training.

Females tend to have higher performance than males in clerical and food services training courses, when aptitude scores are held constant. To help account for the differences, educational level and interest in clerical-type activities are included in this analysis, along with aptitude composite scores. A recommendation is made about adjusting aptitude qualifying scores for females. New kinds of tests are being evaluated as potential additions to the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). They are compared on the basis of the criterion variance they explain when added to the ASVAB. The evaluation may use scores on the ASVAB given during enlistment processing, or a new ASVAB may be administered concurrently with the new tests. This paper compares these two research designs in terms of their effect on evaluation of new tests. The analysis uses Infantry data from the Marine Corps' Job Performance Measurements project, in which concurrent as well as enlistment ASVAB scores are available. While lower increments in explained variances are obtained when the ASVAB in concurrent, the difference between the administrations is small compared to various across criterion variables and occupational areas.
