Hopes this letter finds Knox in New York arranging for his duties as Secretary of War. Rejoices in Knox's selection as the patriot and the soldier are nobly united in your person. Says Knox can write to him as a friend or as secretary of war. Lafayette goes on to say he might be a useful tool in some expeditions, but that he should keep quiet about it. Says he had a chance to write John Jay a few words on the affair of Longchamps, a journey I intend taking to be back in October, and a whale oil proposal, in consequence of what you told me at Boston, which is all what I could obtain this year. Is happy that General Nathanael Greene has sent his son to France to be educated with his own son. Hopes Knox will also send his son. Says he has been on the lookout for Knox's brother William, but suspects he has returned to America.

Previously thought Knox's brother William had returned to America, but he recently received news that he had been confined in a house in London since January because he was disordered in His Head. Reports William is better and in a few weeks will be able to go out, which he very much desires. Says he wanted to go to London upon hearing the news, but thought better of it as his travels would no doubt be noticed by many and might cause unseemly news about William to get in the newspapers. Sent a trusted family member instead, who has made sure William received proper care. Hopes that William will travel to Paris after he improves. Lafayette claims he will travel to London under a false name if need be, however. Mentions arrangements of getting William to France. With these arrangements in place, he says he will travel to Berlin at some point in the next month to review the Prussian and Austrian troops. Will also visit several battlefields and hopes to be back in Paris by October. Goes on to say I confidentially intrust to you, my dear Sir, that I am about purchasing a fine plantation in a french Colony, to make the Experiment for Enfranchising Our Negro Brethren, god grant it may Be propagated!

Discusses the politics of Europe, including conflicts with the Turks. States that the Turks have numerous flocks of armed men - their Cavalry, which in the first shock, is not despicable, has it is said, surrounded three thousand of the Austrians and cut of their Heads, as is usual among them - they also had a successful Skirmish against the Russians - but there is no doubts of the advantages which such disciplined armies as those of the allied empires will have our a banditti of men who are totally Stranger to discipline, military knowledge, and rational calculations.. Discusses the news of Great Britain, Holland, France, Spain, Prussia, and Poland regarding involvement in the conflict. It is not improbable that the two imperial courts will, after one campaign, content themselves for the present with a considerable increase of their provinces - but it would also be foreseen that a War may be kindled through all Europe, and end with the total destruction of the Ottoman Empire in Europe. Mentions the unrest in France: The internal affairs of France are not yet settled - many considerable reforms have taken place... but a great deficiency still subsists, and as the parliament have declared themselves unfit to [consent?] to taxes, altho' the provincial assemblies are not yet the representatives of the people - I think the King will be obliged to assemble the nation sooner than is expected by the ministers.. Expresses some worry over the condition of the country. I have some reason to think that Government is preparing an attack on the parliament who altho' they are only a judicial court have shown a spirit of resistance, and refused to register any new tax until the States General have met. Noted as a copy in the docket. Watermarked IV and with a fleur-de-lis. Docketed in Henry Knox's hand.

A long letter, in which Lafayette discusses revolutionary France, his personal affairs and associations, and the light his personal correspondence with George Washington will cast on the memoirs of General Washington being written by Bushrod Washington. On revolutionary France and the war being waged by Napoleon, he writes: I am among the few who persist to profess that the Liberal seeds which among so much weed have been sown upon European[,] and particularly upon French, ground cannot and shall not be ultimately lost. He discusses personal relationships with Lord Cornwallis and Napoleon. Indicates that he spends most of his time at La Grange and denies his suitability for diplomatic work. Professes his love for America as his second home. Explains that his correspondence with Washington will illuminate the intrigues of 1777 and 1778, the Transactions with France, the decisive campaign in Virginia, and the Grand stroke of the war in 1781. Indicates that he will rely on McHenry's consultation with Bushrod to render the work. Marked Duplicate.
