Previously thought Knox's brother William had returned to America, but he recently received news that he had been confined in a house in London since January because he was disordered in His Head. Reports William is better and in a few weeks will be able to go out, which he very much desires. Says he wanted to go to London upon hearing the news, but thought better of it as his travels would no doubt be noticed by many and might cause unseemly news about William to get in the newspapers. Sent a trusted family member instead, who has made sure William received proper care. Hopes that William will travel to Paris after he improves. Lafayette claims he will travel to London under a false name if need be, however. Mentions arrangements of getting William to France. With these arrangements in place, he says he will travel to Berlin at some point in the next month to review the Prussian and Austrian troops. Will also visit several battlefields and hopes to be back in Paris by October. Goes on to say I confidentially intrust to you, my dear Sir, that I am about purchasing a fine plantation in a french Colony, to make the Experiment for Enfranchising Our Negro Brethren, god grant it may Be propagated!

Later copy of letter written by Knox to Lafayette at GLC02437.03276. Thanks Lafayette for the kind treatment given to his brother William. Discusses the affair of Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant, who had been sent to France in 1783 to purchase jeweled eagle badges for the members of the Society of the Cincinnati. L'Enfant returned to America in 1784 and brought back many badges purchased on credit. The price proved too high for some officers, which left L'Enfant in a bind. Goes on to say that the Society approved of L'Enfant's conduct and owed 630 dollars to him for his services in France, which Knox says was recently offered to him. L'Enfant refused the payment until the entire issue of the badges purchased on credit is cleared up with the Society. Says L'Enfant will write to Lafayette. Reports he will keep Washington informed. Written on lined paper with an embossed image of a building on the upper left corner.

Writes to Webber, a caretaker and friend of Knox's brother William in England, regarding William's illness. Comments that he is very happy to hear William is doing well and that his prospects for recovery are positive. Discusses the likelihood that William will return to the United States, and hopes that he will, as his family will be able to provide a thousand tendernesses to soothe his mind & restore its tranquility. If William recovers, Knox suggests he stay in New York, with Knox and his wife and children; if he returns while still ill, requests that William return to Boston, as Knox has arranged for his care there. Reaffirms his statement in a previous letter that in case my brothers affairs should be so embarrased as to render him unable to pay the expenses of his confinement, Knox will reimburse Webber for any advances he had to make. Encloses a letter to William, as well as a packet to Mrs. Flucker, his mother-in-law, which he hopes Webber can safely deliver to her. Mrs. Knox sends her regards.
