Excerpt from Maps and Survey This book is designed as an introduction to the study of- Maps and the processes of Survey by which they are made. In planning the work it was necessary to decide in the first place whether to call it Maps and Survey, or Survey and Maps: that is to say, whether to take the logical order, of Survey before Maps, or the order of general interest and use, which is Maps before Survey. Since many more people use maps than are engaged in making them, or than need to know the details of how they are made, it seemed better to begin with the consideration of the map as it is published and used. A clear understanding of the best results that have been produced up to the present time, leading to an appreciation of the ways along which progress is desirable, will make a convenient basis for the study of the methods of Survey, and the manner in which our representation of the worlds surface may be extended and improved. Some years of experience in teaching the elements of Geodesy and of Topographical Survey to the students of the Department of Geography in the University of Cambridge have shown me that there is need of a book which shall give a general account of the many-sided art of Survey. Excerpt from Surveys and Maps of the District of Columbia Since the foregoing was written I have personally visited and inspected most of the boundary monuments of the original District of Columbia, set in 1791 and 1792. Though this inspection is still incomplete, it is deemed advisable to print here the following table, showing the condi tion of the monuments so far as inspected, and especially to print the variation of the compass recorded upon them. These variations are the earliest ones observed and recorded for the District of Columbia, and the only record of them known to me is upon these boundary monu ments. These monuments are of Aquia creek sandstone and were sawed out. Through abuse and exposure to the weather the inscriptions are becoming obscured, a few being already totally lost. Excerpt from Instructions for Making Forest Surveys and Maps, 1910 These instructions are issued to members of the Forest Service in order that forest surveys and maps may be as nearly uniform as practicable. They do not include directions for the use of instruments of great precision, and the tables are prepared only to such accuracy as is attained in careful timber cruising or in surveying with the magnetic compass. Excerpt from Maps: Their Uses and Construction The book was written at the suggestion of an officer of high standing in charge of survey work, who, in the course of conversation on a long sea voyage, ex pressed his opinion very strongly, to the effect that an easy and elementary book on map projection would be of great use to many junior members of his survey staff, who found it very difficult to understand the regular treatises, and who often got lost in a mass of details. Excerpt from Railway Right-of-Way Surveying This little book outlines a modern system of right-of-way survey ing, leveling, and mapping. Though the system as a whole applies particularly to railroads, the adjustment diagram feature will be found useful in the special adjustment of streets, canals, highways, and old boundary lines. It is hoped the suggestions here given will save time in the organization and prosecution of the work and above all will lead to accurate and permanent results. The method of survey herein described must not be confused with the common one of using the outside head of rail as a base line for locating the various structural features. Vast sums of money have been spent for such surveys, leaving no permanent field reference to lines run and recording sets of maps without any measurements whatever. Many of them have been ordered under the directing influence of rushing some kind of survey through as quickly as possible for pur poses of reconstruction hence no criticism is here offered. But there is no excuse whatever for property surveys not referable to fixed base lines, whether they result in the scale maps above referred to or in the so-called very complete maps, showing instrument lines run, angles and measurements, direct from the field book. The former class of maps is of little practical value, while the latter contains a mass of data not directly available.
