Excerpt from A Manual of Harmony Yielding to oft-repeated and urgent requests for the publication of the method according to which I have for years given instruction in the Theory of Music, I have decided to publish the fruits of my private study and experience in teaching, in the form of three instruction-books. The first of these will be entitled "A Manual of Harmony," to be followed as soon as possible by a second on "Single and Double Counterpoint," and a third on "Canon and Fugue." An attempt to give an idea of the new features which I have introduced, both as regards the elucidation of the chords and their combinations, and the plan of instruction, would take too long; the matter is fully set forth in the following pages. But I will not neglect to call attention to the additional examples given in the Appendix, which are worked out conformably to rules found in the corresponding chapters. I have learned from practical experience in teaching that it does not suffice, in many cases, to show the pupil how the rules are applied in isolated instances, i.e. out of all connection with some piece of music, however small, which forms an organic whole. Almost any pupil can learn a rule more easily i and thoroughly when its application is clearly illustrated in the compact form of one or more little pieces of music. The manifold and peculiar difficulties besetting instruction in musical theory render this method almost indispensable. We derive what we call our rules from the works of the classic masters; but at the same time we find so great a number of exceptions to the rules, that the latter often seem doubtful to the pupil. Take one instance: The pupil learns at first that the seventh in a chord of the seventh must resolve by a step downward. Presently he discovers that in very many cases it may also progress upward by a step, or be held, or enharmonically changed, or even led down by a skip to tones belonging to other chords. Thus nothing is left him of the rule first laid down but the principle that the seventh is to be led downward by a step, when the following chord and the correct leading of the parts permit of so doing. Excerpt from A Course of Harmony The present work is the outcome of a request, addressed to me by the Council of the Royal College of Music some years ago (as the Professor responsible for the teaching of Harmony and Counterpoint in that Institution), that I should prepare a Manual of Harmony for use in the College. Began then, its completion was unfortunately delayed by my many and growing engagements, and I found it necessary to ask the aid of my pupil and former assistant, Dr. Sawyer, who has had much experience in teaching this subject, in order that the desired task should be completed. I have thought it right to couple Dr. Sawyer's name with my own on the title-page, as only fair to one who has devoted so much time and rendered so much valuable assistance in the preparation of this work. Excerpt from Richter's Manual of Harmony, a Practical Guide to Its Study: Prepared Especially for the Conservatory of Music at Leipsic That Richter's Manual of Harmony is one of the best text-books ever written on the subject, no one will now deny. In 1843, Richter became professor of harmony and counterpoint in the Conservatory of Leipsic, and this work is the result of his experience as a teacher in that institution. The twelfth edition was published as early as 1876, and the work has been translated into Dutch, Swedish, Italian, Russian, Polish and English. The enormous success of the work becomes apparent when we reflect that it has passed through its twentieth German edition. In preparing this edition of the manual, the editor has endeavored to make the language, which in other editions is often somewhat obscure, more explicit and to the point. Pupils frequently complain that they cannot catch the meaning of many of the explanations. The reason is, that they are not sufficiently advanced in musical knowledge to enable them to comprehend the meaning of the prolix language used. Students, and especially those who have not the advantage of a teacher, require clear and concise directions. Having used this manual many years as a text-book in teaching harmony, the editor has learned by experience where the difficulties lie, and has done what he could to remedy them. Many additional exercises have been appended to the work and also some notes of explanation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Improve your grasp of the subtleties of music with Richter's Manual of Harmony: A Practical Guide to Its Study by E.F. Richter. Richter's Manual of Harmony has been translated from German by John P. Morgan. The content of the book is derived from the course Richter taught about harmony at the Music Conservatory of Leipzig. The manual is intended as a companion to be used by students pursuing formal education in music, and is divided into three sections. The first part of the book introduces the fundamental harmonies and the chords derived from them. Part two discusses accidental chord formations and tones foreign to the harmony. The final chapter of the book examines practical applications of the harmonies and the pure harmonic structure. Throughout the work, Richter suggests exercises for the reader to put into practice the theories taught in the manual. Richter's Manual of Harmony remains one of the great works written on the topic of harmony. Richter was a brilliant musician and an insightful teacher, and the English translation of his work does not lose the power or clarity of his words. The strength of the work is in Richter's explanations of sometimes complex theories, as the author is able to expertly convey advanced principles in simple terms. Richter's Manual of Harmony: A Practical Guide to Its Study is the perfect instructional for advanced students of music. The work is illuminating and informative, and consistently reinforces the lessons taught. Any student of music interested in honing their technical skills would be wise to add this title to their library. Excerpt from Text Book of Harmony AT the outset, it should be stated that a general knowledge of the rudiments of music is presupposed. For this reason the construction Of scales, which is often given in books Of harmony, is here omitted, as the author contends that that subject belongs to the rudiments, as does also the subject of intervals. As, however, a theoretical knowledge of intervals does not enter into all systems Of teaching the elements of music, and an exact knowledge Of intervals is a prerequisite to the study of harmony, a preliminary chapter on them is included for those who may need it. Those who are not thoroughly familiar with intervals should write them out in different keys. All the early examples should also be transposed to different keys till the student gains the power of readily recognising the chords and their progressions in all their varied appearances and disguises.
