Five stories - Five Lives. Have you ever felt confused or at a loss for words in front of a spouse, colleague or parent, to the extent that you have felt inadequate or, worse, a failure? Do you ever wonder why someone close to you seems to endure humiliation without resistance? Manipulators are everywhere. At first these devious and calculating people can be hard to spot, because that is their way. They are often masters of disguise: witty, disarming, even charming in public - tricks to snare their prey - but then they revert to their true self of being controlling and angry in private. Their main aim: to dominate and use others to satisfy their needs, with a complete lack of compassion and empathy for their victim. In this collection of short novellas you meet people like you and me, intent on living happy lives, yet each of them, in one way or another, is caught up and damaged by a manipulative individual. First you meet a manipulator himself, trying to make sense of his irreversible incarceration. Next, there is Tess, whose past is haunted by a wrong decision, then young, successful and well balanced Sophie, who is drawn into the life of a little boy and his troubled father. Next, there is teenage Holly, who is intent on making a better life for herself and finally Lisa, who has to face a parent's biggest regret. All stories highlight to what extent abusive manipulation can distort lives and threaten our very feeling of self-worth.

I grew up in Kerala as the eldest daughter of a middle class family struggling to meet the both ends, with three sisters in a row and a brother at the end. My marriage was arranged to a man without my consent; he married me because of the pressure from his mother. Then I found that my college mate, whom I had a crush on, was also a victim of manipulations by his close family members. Manipulation to him was more visible, but he was too polite to resist due to love, respect, and concerns he carried in his mind for them. By hearing his story and experiencing the result of coaxing in my own life, I thought of telling these to somebody, but had no intention to publish. But my college mate made me promise to him to write his side of the story after his death which I did in this book. Then I added my story too with it.I believe the time parents selecting the spouses for their children are gone. It worked for ages, but the high aspirations, freedom, independence and globalization changed the culture and demography, challenging the old order. It is high time that parents ask the children's wish in finding their spouses. Incompatibility between couples is a major reason for divorce .I hope my memoir will be a lesson to many including parents and the young ones who are getting ready to wed.

Argues that a man is a human being who works, while a woman chooses to let a man provide for her and her children in return for carefully dispensed praise and sex. This book maintains that only if women and men look at their place in society with honesty, will there be any hope for change.
