The assessment, remediation, and redevelopment of manufactured gas plant (MGP) sites pose a significant technical and financial challenge to successor property owners, including municipalities and other public entities undertaking brownfields revitalization, and to their consulting environmental engineers. Due to the toxicity of many coal tar constituents, sites contaminated as a result of gasworks operations pose a significant threat to public health. This book will discuss the history of the manufactured gas industry in Massachusetts (the largest in the US), as well as the toxicity of gasworks waste products, technical challenges in the cleanup process, and the process for site cleanups.

In order to meet the need for improved data management and analysis at former manufactured gas plant (FMGP) sites, a data management system was developed that incorporates global and site specific tools. These tools allow for the storage, standardization, integration, and analysis of data produced during site investigation activities at these sites. The data management system development process is discussed, the structure and capabilities are outlined, and the data management system is applied to specific issues at FMGP sites. These issues include: determining the type and concentration of chemicals present in soil and groundwater at FMGP sites, comparing detected contaminant levels to groundwater discharge standards, evaluating analytical quantitation limits and their relationship to regulatory contamination levels of concern, and determining contamination levels in site soils at depths accessible to site workers. The data management system visualization tools were demonstrated using the Marshalltown FMGP site. From the research, data collection and reporting protocols were developed for the improvement of site characterization reports.
