Insights of a modern mystic Peter Mulraney is a modern day or urban mystic. Unlike ancient mystics, he’s not secluded in a monastery or ashram but lives an everyday life much like yours. Making Space For The Divine invites you to join Peter in reflecting on some of the insights he’s received from making space for the divine in his busy life. Peter sees himself as a mystic and not a guru, so this is a book of insights to contemplate, not a set of teachings you will be asked to believe. Hopefully, while you’re reflecting on Peter’s insights, you’ll receive a few of your own.

Theologian Harry Lee Poe and chemist Jimmy H. Davis argue that God's interaction with our world is a possibility affirmed equally by the Bible and the contemporary scientific record. Rather than confirming that the cosmos is closed to the actions of the divine, advancing scientific knowledge seems to indicate that the nature of the universe is actually open to the unique type of divine activity portrayed in the Bible.

Knowing where things are seems effortless. Yet our brains devote tremendous computational power to figuring out the simplest details about spatial relationships. Going to the grocery store or finding our cell phone requires sleuthing and coordination across different sensory and motor domains. Making Space traces this mental detective work to explain how the brain creates our sense of location. But it goes further, to make the case that spatial processing permeates all our cognitive abilities, and that the brain’s systems for thinking about space may be the systems of thought itself. Our senses measure energy in the form of light, sound, and pressure on the skin, and our brains evaluate these measurements to make inferences about objects and boundaries. Jennifer Groh describes how eyes detect electromagnetic radiation, how the brain can locate sounds by measuring differences of less than one one-thousandth of a second in how long they take to reach each ear, and how the ear’s balance organs help us monitor body posture and movement. The brain synthesizes all this neural information so that we can navigate three-dimensional space. But the brain’s work doesn’t end there. Spatial representations do double duty in aiding memory and reasoning. This is why it is harder to remember how to get somewhere if someone else is driving, and why, if we set out to do something and forget what it was, returning to the place we started can jog our memory. In making space the brain uses powers we did not know we have.

The inspiration for this book came from a series of teachings about the trials that many people have shared with me. These trials , and the choices we make in the midst of our struggles, are dramatically affected by whether or not we have made space for God in our lives. Not just Sunday-morning space or Bible-study space or prayer-time space, but openness at the very center of our lives. Although we so often clutter and even squander the space God originally created in us, He still wants to live there. He is gently persistent, infinitely patient, unfathomably faithful. When we are ready and willing, if we allow Him, He promises to use whatever we make available. And God wastes neither time nor space: He will begin renovations as soon as He gets the go-ahead.

What is meditation? Many people mistakenly understand it as an attempt to clear the mind and thereby transcend the intellect. It is not that. As Rabbi Yitzchak Ginsburgh explains in this illuminating work, meditation is meant to refine our intellect to become a channel for Divine consciousness. In this work, the rabbi guides us through a meditation rooted in basic Judaic teachings, also useful to practitioners of other spiritual disciplines. The core meditative exercise presented here is examined at length through the prism of Kabbalistic thought. It focuses on positive thinking, Divine love, and negation of any negative influences. The exercise is both a meditation in itself and a platform for other meditations, and involves essentially imagining oneself in a six-sided "thought cube" which creates a protective, spiritual "sanctuary" around oneself. Within this sacred space one can safely open one's heart in prayer.Glossary and index included.

Written from an ecumenical standpoint as a practical aid for moving those experienced in individual spiritual direction toward group practices This book responds to the movement to expand spiritual direction beyond the classic on-with-one model. Group spiritual direction has the potential to offer the rich experience of individual spiritual direction to a much wider audience, yet very little has been written to provide guidance for starting such groups. This book responds to that challenge. It outlines ways that a diverse and ecumenical group of spiritual directors worked to initiate groups in multiple contexts. It examines the many variables-among directors, directees, even meeting spaces-that affect and enliven this ministry. And it summarizes pitfalls, success, and discoveries.

Divine Hands is an invitation to turn your attention to the reality of God's presence... at all times. We are held by the presence of the Triune God as we journey through life in the hard places, in the good places, and through our transformation. Divine hands hold us secure in the darkest places. They hold us as we respond in prayer to God's offer of intimacy, and they hold us in battle when we encounter the enemy of God. We are also held in joy as we experience and celebrate the life of God, and we are empowered and strengthened as we partner with God. We are surrounded by songs of deliverance and released for Kingdom influence as we align with God in his mission and rely on his presence. And finally we are held in rest, free from our striving, as we lean into the One who loves us most.We are held by God: secure, empowered, and released for his glory.
