Costruito alla metà del Quattrocento da Michelozzo per volere dei Medici, il palazzo divenne il prototipo dell'Architettura civile rinascimentale. La mole robusta e austera del palazzo, in origine ridotta a una sorta di cubo, è stata per almeno un secolo l'Immagine più diretta ed efficace del primato politico e culturale dei Medici a Firenze. Dopo un periodo di incuria, nel 1659 i Medici lo vendettero ai Riccardi che lo hanno ampliato verso nord e in parte ristrutturato gli interni. Gli interventi di gusto barocco, particolarmente intensi negli ultimi due decenni del secolo, furono improntati dal fasto spettacolare e dall'Erudizione ricercata. Tramontato tanto splendore, nel 1814 i Riccardi cedettero il palazzo al demanio.
