Excerpt from Women's City Club Magazine, Vol. 6: February 1, 1932 So say the directors, past and present, who assembled at a luncheon January 12, at the City Club, in honor of the retiring members of the Board and to welcome four new members elected only the day before. It was unique in more ways than that, say those who were privileged to be present. The extraordinary feature, they believe, is the fact that each guest looked back upon her term of office with pride and pleasure and that each still holds with complete confidence the vision she held in the formative years of the Club. Any reminiscence, howsoever pleasant, is tinged with a certain wistfulness. And so there was that also about the gathering. Memories obtruded as incidents were recalled, reminding that time and change are, after all, lords of life. But the present and the future soon took hold and turned the meeting into a session as earnest and forward, looking as any held thirteen, twelve or five years ago. The consciousness of the reunion pivoted upon the fact that the City Club has never receded from the ideals of its founders and that each past director looked back upon her term of service as a period Of fulfillment. Excerpt from Women's City Club Magazine, Vol. 12: February, 1938 Many of the papers and letters of Sir joseph Banks form another of the manu script collections. Sir joseph Banks was president of the Royal Society for many years. He sailed with Captain Cook on his first voyage around the world. Al most every voyage oi exploration set ting out from England in the last half of the eighteenth century was outfitted by him or he had a scientist aboard. He was responsible for the voyage of the Bounty. He was interested in many phases of English life - coinage, wool and sheep, insects, drainage, antiqui ties, everything. Two copies of the first folio edition of Shakespeare's works are in the library and one copy of each of the second, third and fourth folio editions. Old Eng lish documents - indentures, tax - lists and wills - dating from Shakespeare's time and earlier, form an interesting back ground here. Other early English drama fists are represented, too, like Shirley and Dekker and Ben jonson, with single plays of early edition or in early col lections of plays. Excerpt from Women's City Club Magazine, Vol. 2: February, 1928-January, 1929 Under the influence of the Com munity Chest - and under no other influence in our midst - every variety of class consciousness, every sectarian difference, every shade of economic theory, is forgotten. It lifts all of us together to a height where pettiness may not intrude, where prejudice is ignored, and where selfishness is ashamed to appear. That height is higher than our highest hill. It has been worth the climbing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
