(c). aR. Over the other congregation a brilliant orator officiated. By his soul-compelling sermons many people were attracted, and as a result, . his congregation also grew. But were his parishioners truly satisfied and contented? We are forced to admit, no. "If our pastor would only come to see us," they say, or, "Pastor certainly gives us some wonderful sermons, but we would also like to have him visit us personally, so that we may discuss our spiritual welfare with him." The souls of this congregation expressed a desire for personal ministration, which was not fulfilled. The result was that the first-mentioned congregation grew faster, became more united in action, and was more satisfied than the latter. The example of these two congregations is but one of the many that prove the need of the soul for personal ministration. But why cite examples? The picture of Christ humbly walking among the publicans and sinners is the most glorious one that we can find. Pastors, we need your personal visits as well as your sermons. While we know that it is through the Word of God alone that we find salvation, yet we would wish to receive that Word not only in our churches, but also in our homes. If you are very busy, come whenever

Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ...1. An address to His diseiples, in the presenee of a vast multitude, w. 1--12 (paraphrase), v. 13. So the diseourse had meant nothing to him! His mind had been elsewhere, and he had impatiently waited until the Savior had eoneluded His address. It was nothing to him that the Lord warns His own: v. 5. The Lord's solemn injunetion, w. 8. 9, and the eomforting promise, v. 12, equally unheeded. The man wanted his share of the inheritance! v. 13. So it is with men to-day. They know there is a Chureh of Christ on earth, know that there is a Bible, sacraments, the preaehing of the Gospel. But all this is nothing to the world; the gaining of riches is everything. Toward the aequisition of wealth men will devote every effort, saerifiee health, friendship, honor. A wrong view of life, surely, into whieh their desire for wealth has deceived them, the view, that "a man's life eonsisteth in the abundanee of things which he possesseth," v. 15. This the prevalent view among men to-day, espeeially in our country. The parable, w. 16--21. A fool the Lord calls him. Why? Because he has a view of life whieh is utterly wrong. A fool, because he considers the things of this temporal existenee the essential things--money, fields, barns, fruits, to eat, to drink, to be merry. A fool, beeause he leaves God out of the reekoning. My goods, my barns, my fruits. Really? Whose rain was it, whose sunshine? So to-day. The "self-made men." Nebuchadnezzar, Dan. 4, 30. Parallels from every-day life. Again: wrong view of life: The rieh man imagined he was living only for himself. Left fellow-man out of his reekoning. "What shall I do?" No thought of helping others. Mine, mine, all mine! So many of the rieh will look about them and see all the...

Not illustrated. 1919 edition. Excerpt: ...Rom. 1,22. "Add thou not to His words, lest He reprove thee, and thou be found a liar." Prov. 30, 6. That Church is built upon no practical, but upon a dangerously sandy foundation which places the traditions of the Church-fathers on equal footing with the Bible, and which makes a supposedly infallible pope the teacher of its people. "Nothing must be believed which cannot be comprehended by reason." This view, announced by Zwingli and shared by Calvin, is the principle of the Reformed Churches. Thus they are established upon an unsound, unsafe foundation. By standing squarely and firmly upon the Bible as the only source of doctrine and norm of life, the Lutheran Church has chosen the only safe and only practical foundation. God grant that she, as a practical Church, ever 6tand there and not move an inch! 2. The Lutheran Church is a practical Church also for the reason that she has a practical aim. Our-Lord said to His disciples: "In My Father's house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto Myself, that where I am, there ye may be also." Here Christ points out the aim and end of every Christian, his entrance into the heavenly mansions. Of this wondrous goal St. Paul speaks when he says: "We know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." 2 Cor. 5(/l. And the Apostle prays to the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may give unto the Corinthians the spirit of wisdom, so that they may know what is the hope of God's calling, and what are the riches of...

Of Jesus he says: "The result of the study of Jesus' teaehing is to leave us with two eontradietory elements only partially synthesized in the gospel-reeords, perhaps even in his own thinking not fully fused." Beeause there are people who entertain fanatieal millenarian ideas, he speaks as if Jesus had not suffieiently solved the problems of apoealyptieism, but exeuses Him by saying: "That any real genius, any virile leader in the world's thinking, is eonsistent, the study of philosophy and religion has long ago disproved. Every sueh pioneer solves eertain problems, but overlooks others, and even ereates new ones, leaving them behind for his sueeessors." Of Matthew's gospel he writes (p. 179j: "Matthew's gospel is eommonly regarded as a eombination of three main elements: a eolleetion of Jesus' sayings, probably made by Matthew himself; the Gospel of Mark; and eertain speeial sourees. The Markan apoealypse was ineorporated bodily. Although probably writing after the fall of Jerusalem, the editor did not palpably alter his souree to fit the faets. He merely ehanged eertain phrases and added eertain sayings of Jesus whieh enhanee the apoealyptic tone of the seetion." As to the doetrine of the apostles, he elaims that Paul teaehes that when all the eleet among the Gentiles have been saved, "the Jews will turn to Christ and be restored aeeording to the Old Testament promises." He also distinguishes between the kingdom of God and the Messianie kingdom, and tells us that Paul makes the latter the present time of imperfeetion and strife, 1 Cor. 15, 24, while God is to reign in a perfeet world after the...
