Should parents aim to make their children as normal as possible to increase their chances to “fit in”? Are neurological and mental health conditions a part of children’s identity and if so, should parents aim to remove or treat these? Should they aim to instill self-control in their children? Should prospective parents take steps to insure that, of all the children they could have, they choose the ones with the best likely start in life? This volume explores all of these questions and more. Against the background of recent findings and expected advances in neuroscience and genetics, the extent and limits of parental responsibility are increasingly unclear. Awareness of the effects of parental choices on children’s wellbeing, as well as evolving norms about the moral status of children, have further increased expectations from (prospective) parents to take up and act on their changing responsibilities. The contributors discuss conceptual issues such as the meaning and sources of moral responsibility, normality, treatment, and identity. They also explore more practical issues such as how responsibility for children is practiced in Yoruba culture in Nigeria or how parents and health professionals in Belgium perceive the dilemmas generated by prenatal diagnosis.

This book presents a selection of controversial issues of practical importance in pediatric dermatology with the aim of enabling the reader to adopt a well-balanced and evidence-based approach to the management of dermatological disorders encountered during childhood. It is not, therefore, structured according to a basic disease classification; rather it addresses a series of dilemmas in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of conditions, including inflammatory disorders, tumors, immune and autoimmune disorders. In addition to areas of debate in the management of individual conditions, controversies in the use of particular types of treatment, for example retinoids, cyclosporin, acyclovir, and laser therapy, are considered and relevant psychological aspects are discussed. Practical Pediatric Dermatology will assist pediatricians and dermatologists in decision making during daily clinical practice.

Bussamarai was a personal resistance leader whose influence spread across five aboriginal nations. Like the legendary Pemulway, Yagan or Jandamara, he fought for the survival of his people, the Mandandanji of southern Queensland. Their homeland bordered northern New South Wales and its infamous sites of Aboriginal massacre and frontier warfare- Myall Creek, Slaughterhouse Creek and Waterloo Creek. This history serves as a sequel to those atrocities, so unforgettably chronicles in Roger Milliss's Waterloo Creek. Closely researched and finely grained, this is the first analysis of this fierce leader and the Mandandanji whose valiant fight for their homeland led to their decimation.More than an account, this is a story enriched by the interpolations of an author whose background in social psychology brings him to speculate on racial violence and the psychological effects of a massacre in 19th century Australia.

The Routledge Handbook of Anthropology and Reproduction is a comprehensive overview of the topics, approaches, and trajectories in the anthropological study of human reproduction. The book brings together work from across the discipline of anthropology, with contributions by established and emerging scholars in archaeological, biological, linguistic, and sociocultural anthropology. Across these areas of research, consideration is given to the contexts, conditions, and contingencies that mark and shape the experiences of reproduction as always gendered, classed, and racialized. Over 39 chapters, a diverse range of international scholars cover topics including: Reproductive governance, stratification, justice, and freedom. Fertility and infertility. Technologies and imaginations. Queering reproduction. Pregnancy, childbirth, and reproductive loss. Postpartum and infant care. Care, kinship, and alloparenting. This is a valuable reference for scholars and upper-level students in anthropology and related disciplines associated with reproduction, including sociology, gender studies, science and technology studies, human development and family studies, global health, public health, medicine, medical humanities, and midwifery and nursing.

Mushin provides the first full grammatical description of Garrwa, a critically endangered language of the Southwest Gulf of Carpentaria region in Northern Australia. Garrwa is typologically interesting because of its uncertain status in the Australian language family, its pronouns and its word order syntax. This book covers Garrwa phonology, morphology and syntax, with a particular focus on the use of grammar in discourse. The grammatical description is supplemented with a word list and text collection, including transcriptions of ordinary conversation.
