The park lies on the shared boundary of Rockingham and Guilford counties, north of the city of Greensboro, and is a key destination on the state's mountains-to-sea Trail. The length of river in the park and vicinity is defined by relatively broad floodplains for the region as well as significant lengths of wetlands stretching along the river corridor. Several high quality natural communities in and around the park property also distinguish the park with a number of diverse scenic experiences within short distances from one another including piedmont oak-hickory forest, floodplain swamp, and early successional field.
