This dissertation investigates the challenges in designing low-profile, compact and broadband antennas for HF, VHF, UHF applications and presents novel antenna solutions to address them. This thesis focuses on three major HF-UHF applications and proposes antenna solutions for them. The first application is ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna design for HF-UHF applications. This is mainly useful in military systems where the antenna should demonstrate monopole-like radiation characteristics and should be as small as possible specially having a low-profile antenna design is highly desired. The second part of the thesis focuses on applications where low-profile and compact antennas with directional radiation patterns are required. This application requires wide bandwidths to enable relatively high data rate and long-range communications, wideband jamming purposes, and to reduce the co-site interference between multiple antennas operating on frequency bands located near each other. The third application that this dissertation focuses on is small-aperture direction-finding (DF) systems for HF-UHF applications. The limited size of the antenna aperture inversely impacts the accuracy of the DF system and limits its bandwidth of operation. A novel broadband antenna solution is introduced to address such challenges. Finally, a possible future work that this thesis can be extended to further address the issue of size-performance tradeoff in antenna design for HF-UHF applications.

The development of a compact reconfigurable HF-UHF antenna is of great practical importance in mobile military communications where low visibility and high mobility are required Variations of monopole and diPOLE ANTENNAS IN USE TODAY ARE NARROWBAND AND ARE PROHIBITIVELY LARGE AND BULKY AT THESE FREQUENCIES Broadband antennas are not only large but also suffer from jamming susceptibility and undesirable complex multiplexing requirements. Development of efficient small geometry planar and reconfigurable antennas is investigated Based on a resonating slot structure small antennas that exhibit simultaneous bandselectivity and antijam characteristics, So far very small antennas using novel topologies have been developed that areas as small as (0.05lamba)2. Also efficient reconfigurability over a very wide range of frequency using electronic switches has been demonstrated, Design of DC contact efficient MEMS switches and wideband designs are also being considered.

The paper describes the design, fabrication, and evaluation of three different types of low-profile VHF antennas and their applications with seismic detection systems at or near ground level. These electrically small antennas (vertically polarized) include a capacitively tuned multi-turn loop over a small metal ground plane, a spiral transmission line top-loaded monopole, and a capacitor-plate antenna that can be inductively tuned over a wide frequency range. The radiation pattern of each is essentially that of a dipole, omnidirectional in the horizontal plane and represented by a solid of revolution generated by a rotating figure of 8. All of the above elemental 'dipole' antennas were designed for optimum performance in the 100- to 200MHz frequency range, compatible with various physical, electrical, and environmental constraints determined by the terminal delivery vehicle (TDV) of the seismic detector system. Distinctive features of these low-profile antennas include small size (3 in. maximum), simplicity of construction, and low fabrication costs. (Author).

This introduction to antenna theory and design is suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate courses on the subject. Its emphasis on both principles and design makes it perfect both as a college text and as a reference to the practicing engineer. The final three chapters on computational electromagnetics for antennas are suitable for graduate work. Stutzman provides more of a pedagogical approach than its competitors, placing a greater emphasis on a concise easily understandable presentation of fundamentals and applications as well as computational methods. This third edition has been completely revised. New topics have been added on antennas for personal and mobile communications and base station antennas. Coverage of systems applications of antennas, arrays, microstrip and low-profile antennas, and antenna measurements has been updated and expanded, including more examples applied to modern applications.

For a variety of mechanical and electrical reasons, the U.S. Army prefers to use a wire antenna for its mobile applications in the HF and VHF bands. However, due to the rapid fluctuation of impedance with frequency, a simple wire antenna is not suitable. This research will look into the aspects of electronic switching of the antenna length and electronic switching of the accompanying tuning network for frequency hopping applications. Two separate schemes will be studied. The first one involves a chosen wire antenna loaded with PIN diodes. The diodes will be selectively switched ON or OFF at different frequencies to control the input impedance of the antenna. In the second scheme, a monopole antenna of fixed length will be considered and data on its input impedance over many sub-bands within 30 to 90 MHz will be generated. Tuning networks composed of resistors, inductors and capacitors will be designed over each sub-band. The various networks will then be connected via PIN diodes and selectively switched to provide matching over a much wider band.
