The power and influence of Grace increases with each passing year. Here, Daphne Brooks traces Jeff Buckley's fascinating musical development through the earliest stages of his career, up to the release of the album. With access to rare archival material, Brooks illustrates Buckley's passion for life and hunger for musical knowledge, and shows just why he was such a crucial figure in the American music scene of the 1990s. EXCERPT: Jeff Buckley was piecing together a contemporary popular music history for himself that was steeped in the magic of singing. He was busy hearing how Dylan channeled Billie Holiday in Blonde On Blonde and how Robert Plant was doing his best to sound like Janis Joplin on early Led Zeppelin recordings. He was thinking about doo-wop and opera and Elton John and working at developing a way to harness the power of the voice...In the process, he was re-defining punk and grunge "attitude" itself by rejecting the ambivalent sexual undercurrents of those movements, as well as Led Zeppelin's canonical "cock rock" kingdom that he'd grown up adoring. He was forging a one-man revolution set to the rhythms of New York City and beyond. And he was on the brink of recording his elegant battle in song for the world to hear.

The first anthropological collection that reveals patterns of male and female homosexuality in the Muslim World The dramatic impact of Islamic fundamentalism in recent years has skewed our image of Islamic history and culture. Stereotypes depict Islamic societies as economically backward, hyper-patriarchal, and fanatically religious. But in fact, the Islamic world encompasses a great diversity of cultures and a great deal of variation within those cultures in terms of gender roles and sexuality. The first collection on this topic from a historical and anthropological perspective, Homosexuality in the Muslim World reveals that patterns of male and female homosexuality have existed and often flourished within the Islamic world. Indeed, same-sex relations have, until quite recently, been much more tolerated under Islam than in the Christian West. Based on the latest theoretical perspectives in gender studies, feminism, and gay studies, Homosexuality in the Muslim World includes cultural and historical analyses of the entire Islamic world, not just the so-called Middle East. Essays show both age-stratified patterns of homosexuality, as revealed in the erotic and romantic poetry of medieval poets, and gender-based patterns, in which both men and women might, to varying degrees, choose to live as members of the opposite sex. The contributors draw on historical documents, literary texts, ethnographic observation and direct observation by both Muslim and non-Muslim authors to show the considerable diversity of Islamic societies and the existence of tolerated gender and sexual variances.

I had the happy privilege of partly introducing Loris to the Hebrew language. It soon became apparent that she had a rare gift. In short order, she became the "teacher" and added greatly to the entire class. On her own she started tutoring friends, including neighborhood children. She has a beautiful heart full of love for the Bible and others. It does not surprise me to see the creative work she has done. Both she and her book are bound to be a blessing. Professor Don Pickerill Sweeter Than Honey is an amazing series of insights put together by Loris DeMarco. It is more than just some thoughts for devotion. It is a gift with the intention to inspire the body of Christ. The Hebrew application to the Word is as the title "Sweeter Than Honey" ...oh how sweet! The richness presented in her commentary is something to be thankful for; that which can only come from a heart, which is sincerely in love with the Lord and His Word. Loris has given us so much colour in her writings which I believe will help us the reader understand and enjoy God's Word more as He intends for us to understand and love it. Well done Loris and thanks for your dedication to the Lord and His Word. Ashley Van Wyk General Supervisor of the Foursquare Churches in Western Australia.
