Enduring her jet-set life in Sardinia, a woman has learnt to sublimate her erotic longings caused by her husband's impotence, until a visitor offers a more immediate solution. A claustrophobic banker fears the destruction of his relationship when he discovers a yawning hole beneath the streets of Stockholm. The arrival of a gorgeous Russian piano prodigy inspires a screenwriter to look beyond his treadmill London existence. And while fixing a leaking toilet in the wilds of Sweden, Ingmar Bergman explains the predicament of lovers in a hostile world. Love Doesn't Work offers classic storytelling with profound, startling insights into human desire and its shortfalls. Inspired by the ancient Cathars, these seven tales present a vision of life as an inevitable struggle against ignorance, darkness and sexual confusion. Devilish and playful in tone, they leave the reader with a sense of outraged satisfaction and delight.

Rising from the drug-infested streets of '80s New York City, the incomparable Sonic Youth recorded some of the most important albums in alternative music history and influenced an entire generation of indie rockers. They helped spawn an alternative arts scene of underground films and comics, conceptual art, experimental music, even fashion. More than perhaps any band of their time, they brought art previously considered ''fringe'' into the mainstream - and irrevocably altered the cultural zeitgeist. In 2005, The Woman at the Washington Zoo was published to major critical acclaim. The late Marjorie Williams possessed ''a special voice, one capable not just of canny political observations but of tenderness and bracing intimacy,'' observed the New York Times Book Review. Now, in a collection of profiles with the richness of short fiction, Williams limns the personalities that dominated politics and the media during the final years of the twentieth century. In these pages, Clark Clifford grieves ''in his laborious baritone'' a bank scandal's blow to his re-pu-taaaaaay-shun. Lee Atwater likens himself to Ulysses and pleads, ''tah me to the mast!'' Patricia Duff sheds ''precipitous tears'' over her divorce from Ronald Perelman, resembling afterwards ''a garden refreshed by spring rain.'' Reputation illuminates our recent past through expertly drawn portraits of powerful - and messily human - figures.

Fire, one of three new QUEER FILM CLASSICS this fall, delves into the controversial 1996 lesbian love story by Indian-born director Deepa Mehta. Set in a contemporary middle-class Hindu household in the heart of Delhi, Fire is the story of Radha and Sita, the wives of two brothers, who fall in love with one another. Crisis overtakes the extended family when a servant discovers the relationship and tells one of the husbands; overcoming both a literal and allegorical 'trial by fire,' the two women leave their marriages to make a life together. The film premiered to great acclaim in 1996, and travelled the international circuit before being finally released in India in 1999. The consequences of the films Indian premiere were both profound and provocative: outraged by the film's explicit depiction of a lesbian relationship, protesters went on a rampage, tearing down posters, vandalizing cinemas showing the film, and disrupting screenings in Delhi and Bombay, setting off a maelstrom of public discourse on issues such as homosexuality and freedom of speech in India. Director Deepa Mehta and the two leading actresses were targeted for attack and harassment by extremists of the Hindu Right. This book examines the controversy that divided a nation, but which ultimately led to counter protests among the films supporters, resulting in its successful and uninterrupted run in Indian theaters. The book also considers Fire's scathing attack on both heterosexism and Hindu practices in India that oppress and marginalize women, as well as its revolutionary treatment of female characters, whose traditional duties are imbued with an unprecedented sensuality.
