Excerpt from Lotze's Theory of Reality In the writings of this early period Lotze took up a definite point of view with regard to the nature of reality as it manifests itself in the material world. He also put forward his theory as to the nature and function of thought in reference to reality. In his scientific writings he was concerned to establish the View that all problems connected with the movements and forces of the material world, of the world of living beings, and also of the movements of mind in so far as they are psychological, must be solved by purely scientific methods, and on a thoroughly mechanistic basis. He did not put forward a mechanistic theory of the nature of reality; on the contrary, he did not hold such a theory. What he wanted to Show is that mechanical laws rule over the whole of reality in so far as that reality is material and dependent upon what is thus material; and that these laws must have their full weight in any explanation of what takes place in the world. This does not exclude any deeper interpretation as to the ultimate meaning of what takes place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Theory of Relativity Those who look on physics from the outside not infrequently have the feeling that it has forgotten some of its philosophical foundations. Even among its own workers this condition of the science has not entirely escaped notice. The physicist, who, above all other men, has to deal with space and time, has fallen into certain conventions concerning them Of which he is often not aware. It may be true that these conventions are just the ones which he should make. It is certain, however, that they should be made only by one who is fully conscious of their nature as conventions and does not look upon them as fixed realities beyond the power of the investigator to modify. Excerpt from Einstein's Theory of Relativity Of the other books which I have used I should like to quote, above all, Ernst Mach's classical Mechanics (which has appeared in English), and then the very lucidly written volume by E. T. Whittaker, A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity (london, Longmans, Green Co., and the comprehensive account of the Theory of Relativity given by Hermann Weyl in his Space, Time, Matter (english translation published by Messrs. Methuen 81: Co., Ltd., Anyone who wishes to penetrate further into Einstein's doctrines must study the latter work. It is impossible to enumerate the countless books and essays from which I have drawn more or less directly. In conformity with the character of the book I have refrained from giving references.
