Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda, Historia setentrional, publiée en 1617, est une œuvre qui fut longtemps éclipsée par d'autres écrits de Cervantes : l'ingénieux hidalgo de la Manche, dont la deuxième partie des aventures avait vu le jour en 1615, assurait, en effet, à lui seul l'universelle renommée de l'auteur. Il serait pourtant injuste de négliger ce roman sur lequel Cervantes fondait de grandes espérances, qui fut bien accueilli par le public lors de sa parution, puis pâtit de l'extraordinaire succès du Quichotte. L'examen de la production critique moderne concernant le Persiles prouve cependant le remarquable regain d'intérêt qu'il suscite à notre époque, où se multiplient, depuis une trentaine d'années déjà, les éditions de l'œuvre et les études savantes qui éclairent d'un jour nouveau un écrit que l'on estime - enfin ! - digne de beaucoup d'attention. Le Persiles doit être examiné à la lumière de l'ensemble de la production littéraire de Cervantes. C'est pourquoi l'on retrouvera, dans l'équipe de spécialistes universitaires qui a participé à l'élaboration du présent ouvrage collectif, plusieurs noms qui ont déjà contribué au succès de la précédente étude sur le Quichotte publiée en 2001 par les Éditions du temps.
