Hitlers first conquests Austria, the Sudeten region of Czechoslovakia, the demilitarized Rhineland were bloodless. His first bloody strike east crushed Poland. To the west? On May 10, 1940, the Wehrmacht strikes The Netherlands which Hitler expects will capitulate within a day or two. He is mistaken. Grebbe Line defenders exhibit legendary Dutch stubbornness, Hitlers airborne troops drop onto Rotterdam and The Hague and meet fierce opposition, and outnumbered and outgunned Dutch troops change unknowingly at the time the course of WWII and world history. A stout-hearted queen and a Carmelite priest stand up to Nazism, and resistance fighters cunning and courage prove lethal for some of historys lesser-known bad guys. Two girls emigrate from Romanian farms to Paris and then Amsterdam and make life-altering choices. A young American employee of a global steamship company finds himself swept into this maelstrom. This history-rich saga provides perspectives little known to Americans.

Around the turn of the twentieth century, and for decades thereafter, Oregon had the second largest Chinese population in the United States. In terms of geographical coverage, Portlands two Chinatowns (one an urban area of brick commercial structures, one a vegetable-gardening community of shanty dwellings) were the largest in all of North America. Marie Rose Wong chronicles the history of Portlands Chinatowns from their early beginnings in the 1850s until the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act in the 1940s, drawing on exhaustive primary material from the National Archives, including more than six thousand individual immigration files, census manuscripts, letters, and newspaper accounts. She examines both the enforcement of Exclusion Laws in the United States and the means by which Chinese immigrants gained illegal entry into the country. The spatial and ethnic makeup of the combined "Old Chinatown" afforded much more contact and accommodation between Chinese and non-Chinese people than is usually assumed to have occurred in Portland, and than actually may have occurred elsewhere. Sweet Cakes, Long Journey explores the contributions that Oregons leaders and laws had on the development of Chinese American community life, and the role that the early Chinese immigrants played in determining their own community destiny and the development of their Chinatown in its urban form and vernacular architectural expression. Sweet Cakes, Long Journey is an original and notable addition to the history of Portland and to the field of Asian American studies.

One Long Journey is the extraordinary story of Lohit Datta-Barua, who was born into poverty along the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River in the remote state of Assam in northeastern India. As a boy, he walked into the beggar and leper colonies of homeless people and untouchables while rounding up his family's wandering cows. Caste-based taboos blocked his marriage to the woman he loved. Secrets surrounding his birth haunted him, and death stalked him. Datta-Barua drew inspiration from Lincoln's Gettysburg address-which he posted on his wall and memorized-to make the seemingly impossible journey to America with $8 in his pocket. He achieved a high-level career worldwide as an oil and gas engineer and became a major force as an early organizer in the Assamese immigrant community throughout North America. As an inspiring contributor to social justice he continues to touch people's lives.

Here are amazing insights showing reincarnation to be deeply and powerfully revealed in the Bible's most fundamental aspects. How and why have these insights escaped attention for so long? At last, they are uncovered here by a confluence of conventional Bible study and the epochal spiritual discoveries of Rudolf Steiner. With particular emphasis on the organic provisions of the Old Testament, Smith shows both what the assumptions of the Master's hearers were and how the New Testament confirms the ancient heritage. Arising from the fullness of the canon is an exciting story of the long journey of humanity and every human soul, each a "beloved sheep" whom the Creator is unwilling to lose. Combining a lifetime of biblical study and teaching, fifteen years investigating and contemplating Rudolf Steiner's vast works, and almost three decades of applying the analytical skill required in an intense law practice, Smith has produced a potential classic the serious Bible student can ill afford to ignore.
